Senior Manager, Engineering

The VMware Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) platform allows companies to make it easy for employees to work anywhere, any time, on any device, without compromising security. We use a wide range of technologies such as .NET Core/C#, AWS, Linux/Windows, MSSQL Server, Postgres, Elasticsearch and Redis, just to name a few. Explain the vision for this role; What is the primary need, technical challenge, or most significant problem you are hiring someone to solve?
Our goal is to enable Workspace One UEM to scale and manage billions of devices across various operating system platforms and device types. As part of the Windows Hub team you will be providing technical leadership by driving the design and development of the product. You will be owning engineering initiatives and champion a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence. You will coach, manage and mentor a team of high performing engineers.
You have a strong interest in Windows client-side application development and have delivered high usage client-side applications on Windows in C# / C++. You are passionate about end user experience for client applications and focus on high performant applications. You have a good understanding of the Windows 10 operating system and having knowledge of the management aspects of the platform will be a great addition. You have a keen eye for performance and robustness of Windows applications and have experience in performance monitoring, tuning, zero downtime upgrades of Windows applications. You have a good understanding of the .NET Framework and are able to leverage the framework to build rich user-experience applications.
You have experience in managing a team of strong C# / C++ engineers and have driven a culture of good coding practices, testable code, CI/CD and well-monitored applications. You have experience in code reviews, architecture discussions and defining a technical vision for the product you own. You have also experience in working closely with product management to strike a balance between features and engineering excellence. Being a hands-on developer will be a definite advantage.
Within the first 6-12 months, what are the 2-3 most important performance goals (described as SMART Goals if possible) I would be expected to complete for you to consider me successful in this role?
- In the first 6 weeks you will
- get a good understanding of the WS1 Hub for Windows application
- contribute in delivering features as a DRI
- spend time in code-reviews for the team’s code changes
- participate in hiring decisions
- spend time on understanding the usage of the application by the customers
- In the subsequent weeks you will
- Focus on building up the WS1 Hub team, focusing on architecture and code reviews actively
- Grow the team by actively interviewing
- Build a technical roadmap in discussions with the architects and product managers
- Be the coach and the mentor for the WS1 Hub team in Bangalore
- Work closely with multiple stakeholders in other parts of the product
- You will eventually be the engineering owner for the WS1 Hub application and responsible for all facets of the product delivery, usage and maintenance

- You will build software for Windows 10 device management focusing on end user engagement and experience
- You will design software, assist with technology selection, actively remove obstacles, lead engineering programs and write code

This role will be reporting to the Director of Engineering. Our team’s focus is on challenging the status quo by innovating but at the same time getting stuff done. We believe in building trust among all our stakeholders and committing to make our customers successful. The team is organized based on modules to define clear responsibility and accountability. At the same time teams are fluid enough to own up whatever is needed for the larger product to be successful.
