Program Architect, VMware App Navigator - Portfolio

About Us

Cloud transformation is accelerating as organizations everywhere aggressively move toward public and hybrid cloud, edge and 5G technologies to compete and win in the digital age. Of course, change is hard and careful planning is necessary. But, too often that planning is slow, analysis is fraught with assumptions and (let’s face it) often ends up being wrong.

VMware Portfolio Navigator is a service offering created in the belief that when change is hard, iteration is best. We deliver using specialized techniques and tooling that help our consultants, working alongside customers, enable tangible results in days and weeks, not months and years. VMware is doubling down on this approach and growing our team of solution and program architects. We are looking for collaborative people with a passion for customer enablement and outcomes to lead short and impactful Navigator engagements that focus across a broad spectrum of cloud application and platform technologies.

About You

You are a pragmatic, dynamic and thoughtful leader of people and programs with a strong passion for agile and lean principles. You thrive in a complex ecosystem, collecting, sharing, and synthesizing input from many directions and enabling your team to continuously deliver customer value. You love change and feel energized working in new situations with new people. You feel comfortable working with senior stakeholders to define and manage priorities. You are able to communicate technical and programmatic information at the right level of detail for the appropriate varied audiences.  Above all, you judge your success by the success of your team and the happiness of our customers.

What You’ll Be Doing

As Program Architect, you will pair with client stakeholders, product owners, business people and technical teams to discover existing software portfolios, identify value streams and define methods of incremental improvement. You will enable, coach and lead customers through a variety of agile / lean processes: facilitating workshops, leading inceptions, iterating planning, midpoint reviews and outceptions. You will have responsibility for Navigator engagement success, and pay close attention to staffing, team satisfaction, timelines, and scope completion. You will work closely with sales prior to engagement start (understanding context and handling logistical readiness) and during closeout (to help secure next steps, if applicable).

Portfolio Navigator roles are highly collaborative, with 80% of time spent in direct, 1:1 pairing or larger team collaboration. During the COVID-19 crisis, this collaboration is managed remotely, with the expectation that face-to-face engagement in a VMware or customer office will be required once the crisis is resolved. At this future date, you may be asked to travel up to 50% of the time.

You Will Be Responsible For

  • Helping clients to define and plan prioritized program outcomes, measured goals and iterative “get started” plans that create and build momentum

  • Facilitating workshops, using Event Storming, Value Stream Mapping, OKRs, and various other specialized techniques that elicit understanding of existing application portfolios, systems, organizations, business flows and/or related IT processes

  • Establishing effective communications and collaboration between the client, our service delivery teams, delivery leadership, and account teams to ensure alignment and successful expectation management

  • Managing risk, budget, and dependencies, driving staffing demand, handling escalations and planning interventions to improve engagement health when necessary, and continuously measuring appropriate metrics for success

  • Creating documentation, presentations and other customer-facing assets that accomplish intended project objectives

  • Close collaboration with clients and other VMware teams, based on project backlog

  • Support enablement of clients around the principles and practices we apply to lean program management and software delivery

  • Contributing back to the VMware team through mentorship, giving talks, and experience reports

Required Skills and Experience

  • Program management or similar experience, managing portfolios of technical projects

  • Experienced in the complexities of building and deploying software in the enterprise and using a creative mindset to improve velocity (Continuous Delivery) and reduce siloing (DevOps) to achieve a culture of continuous improvement

  • Adaptive use of Agile and Lean practices to drive measured outcomes

  • Strong facilitation skills with experience using tools and practices that help elicit a problem space and potential outcomes with senior stakeholders

  • Comfortable in presenting to executive leadership on goals, metrics, successes and problems

  • Demonstrated success in developing longer-term strategic roadmaps with business alignment and measurement

  • Strong track record of consistent results within budget and at/above expectations

  • Experience in training, mentoring and/or upskilling others

  • Passion for growing your skills, tackling interesting work and challenging problems

  • Up to 50% travel is expected in this role

  • Ability to Work From Home until sufficient resolution of the COVID-19 Crisis

Desired Skills and Experience

Below is a list of skills we value. This is not a checklist. If you have some of these skills, and want to grow into others, then we want to hear from you.

  • 10+ years of prior IT program/portfolio experience

  • Experience planning and management of large scale cloud transformation initiatives

  • Demonstrated past success of generating new business, working with C-level executives and their primary value propositions

  • Demonstrated business acumen to support and drive account development, proposal generation, and sales movements in coordination with the account team
