Ideal candidate

You have a passion for user-centered design and cross-functional agile software teams. You spend time collecting, sharing, and synthesizing input from many sources. You are motivated by helping clients get better at designing and shipping software. You thrive in complex environments and are excited by the organizational value that software can unlock. Your approach to design values shipping over pixel-perfect deliverables. You bring curiosity, humility, empathy, and a learning mindset to everything you do.

What you’ll be doing

You will be working on the VMware Tanzu Labs team in New York City, helping client teams design and deliver modern software applications. As a Labs Product Designer, you will work across many client organizational levels, focusing on coaching clients in user-centered design and Lean UX. This is a "full-stack" design role that drives the design process from early discovery, research, UX, and visual design to final project delivery. This role involves working with client leaders of software teams to develop healthy, sustainable design practices.

This is a highly collaborative consulting role, with 85-90% of time spent in direct, 1:1 pairing or larger team sessions. During the COVID-19 crisis, this is all managed remotely (including user interviews and usability tests), with the expectation that face-to-face engagement in a Tanzu Labs office or various client locations will pick up again once the crisis is resolved.

You will be responsible for:

  • Helping clients develop lean & agile design practices

  • Leading product design from research through implementation

  • Discovering user problems

  • Collaborating across functions to design valuable, desirable, and feasible solutions

  • Maintaining a user-centered approach that is balanced with business outcomes

  • Bringing clarity where there is uncertainty and identifying and managing risk

  • Teaching clients how to do all of these things for themselves

  • Evolving the design practice at VMware

  • Providing mentorship for junior designers

  • Representing VMware's Design practice externally

  • Creating & facilitating remote design workshops with clients

  • Design Thought leadership

  • Supporting sales efforts

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 8-12+ years experience shipping and iterating on software products as a Product Design or similar  (enterprise or large-scale consumer products preferred)

  • Expertise in all areas of Product Design, from user research, experience, interaction, and visual design.

  • Experience with lean and agile practices

  • Ability to break down complex problems into actionable steps with measurable outcomes

  • Interest and ability to teach others

  • Ability to facilitate collaborative design workshops

  • Experience collaborating with engineering and product manager peers on a balanced team

  • Experience working independently with clients or stakeholders in a consulting role

  • Familiarity with modern design tools such as Figma or Sketch

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • User research experience in technical domains

  • Experience working in public sector projects

  • Experience with Service Design techniques

  • Experience with design leadership and community building

  • Ability to travel up to 30% of time once Pandemic is over
