About VMware and TeamTanzu

Ready to build? So are we. Come join VMware’s new exciting Modern Applications Platform Business Unit (MAPBU), made up of products and services under the Tanzu portfolio to help customers build, run and manage their most important applications. We build applications with velocity to run in a cloud-native environment, run open-source Kubernetes with consistency, and manage our customers’ entire footprint with confidence to help them achieve their business outcomes.

You will be a key contributor of the Spring Engineering Team and helping us improve our Java experience in two areas, buildpacks and the Cloud Foundry Java Client library. There is also the chance to contribute to other open source projects in the Spring portfolio. This is a distributed team that uses virtual stand-ups, video meetings and slack to stay in contact throughout the work day. Being productive in a distributed team requires strong communication skills and over time you may have the opportunity to interface with many other parts of the organization, work with customers or present the product at events/conferences.

About the role

We are looking for someone to help improve the Java experience in two areas, buildpacks and the Cloud Foundry Java Client library.

Buildpacks transform source code into container images, providing an alternative to Dockerfiles that works at a higher layer of abstraction. We are looking for someone that understands the needs and desires of Java developers and is excited to help provide an excellent container build experience to those developers. Whether that means providing a build experience for Spring Boot native images that “just works”, or enabling seamless integration with a customer’s preferred security scanning tool, the goal is to anticipate the needs of end users and provide easy-to-use high-quality solutions. By joining us, you will work on a small team that is responsible for both the design and delivery of the Java build experience. Success requires working in close communication with a variety of other groups, both internal and external, including the wider Spring team, the Tanzu Build Service team, the Paketo and Cloud Native Buildpacks projects, and partner organizations.

One of the foundations of Cloud Foundry is its REST API, and as part of our mission to improve the developer experience we’ve built a Java language binding for it. We’re rounding out support for the latest version of the API, using the same guiding principle as we do on all our projects; we take care of the complexities behind the scenes to make our users’ lives easier. You’ll be managing an active open source project, accepting external contributions, implementing new functionality, and keeping existing code ticking over. As the first code in production using Project Reactor we continue to have a role educating our users in reactive programming, as well as helping them use our product successfully.

Why We Are Excited About You

You enjoy staying ahead of technology and continually strive to improve your understanding and engineering craft. You are excited about open source and the impact it can have on the lives of millions of enterprise developers in every industry. You are excited about working on projects that can help and impact millions of developers in the open source world.

Desired Skills:

We know from experience that not ticking every box on the skills sections stops many from applying. You should apply regardless of your self-assessment, because we want to hear from you.

  • Proficient with Golang, Java and Spring.

  • Comfortable with Git and GitHub workflows.

  • Experience with reactive programming patterns

  • Experience working with OCI images and container runtimes such as Docker

Nice To Haves:

  • Public speaking experience

  • Experience working as part of a remote team

  • Experience contributing to open source projects, including (but not limited to) code or documentation contributions, blog posts, StackOverflow answers, and so on

  • Experience with Cloud Native Buildpacks or buildpacks on the CloudFoundry or Heroku platforms

  • Experience with Kubernetes

  • Experience building and maintaining Java applications in production

  • Experience using (or even better, writing) REST APIs
