The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

The Tanzu portfolio within the Modern Applications Business Unit (MAPBU) has a mission to help customers build, run, and manage their most important applications. We build applications wf3ith velocity to run in a cloud-native environment, run open-source Kubernetes with consistency, and manage our customers' entire footprint with confidence to help them achieve their business outcomes.

As the TAS Migration Enablement program, our overarching goal is to help Tanzu Application Service (TAS) TAS customers and open-source CF users transition smoothly to Kubernetes over the next few years. Our charter is to show customers a clear bridge to the future, building confidence and partnership. Our guiding principle is to make it possible and then make it easy.

The Application Migration team will be responsible for ensuring success, coordination, and technical solutions to support our customers in their journey to Kubernetes. You will manage and lead 6+ engineers in executing on this vision. Your team will explore creative approaches to facilitating the migration, working closely with our existing products as well as the cutting edge.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

We are looking for an M3-level Engineering Manager. In this role you will:

  • Manage a team of 6+ engineers and own delivery of several distinct migration solutions for our customers, as well as continued collaboration with the CF open-source community.

  • Collaborate across roles and organizational boundaries to deliver valuable outcomes to our customers.

  • Work closely with engineers to prioritize, unblock, and deliver key software features as a part of our agile processes.

  • Surface feedback to leadership to ensure your team has support and clarity to execute.

  • Understand team health, identify and address unmet needs.

  • Foster an inclusive and intentional leadership pipeline with active sponsorship.

  • Facilitate decision-making, design discussions and challenging conversations.

Success in the role: What are the top priorities for your first 6-12 months in this role?

We expect the engineering manager to prioritize the following areas:

  • Working daily with the team to distribute work, facilitate decision-making, manage the backlog, and coordinate with stakeholders.

  • Building relationships with your reports through regular 1:1s, team health assessments, and career conversations.

  • Ramping up on our vision for migration and joining the effort, including participation in conversations across the larger organization (Developer Application Platform or DAP).

  • Upleveling the engineering team with your understanding of technical quality and effective execution.

Our ideal candidate would say:

  • “I’m excited for the opportunity to dive in and have an impact from day 1."

  • “I’m experienced with distributed systems, specifically Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes.”

  • “I care about helping others grow their skills and career. “

  • “I want to grow communication and enablement skills to effectively lead teams.”

  • “I’m passionate about engineering process, and want to improve how we work.”

  • “I advocate for my team to influence healthy organizational change."

Note: We know from experience that not ticking every box on the skills sections stops many from applying. Please apply regardless of your self-assessment -- we want to hear from you! We have seen engineers succeed with a diverse range of skills and experiences.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This role is for the TAS Migration Enablement program within the larger Developer Application Platform pillar in MAPBU. The hiring manager of this role is Angela Chin, Engineering Lead of the program. Your team is the Application Migration team, working alongside the Systems Migration team. You’ll be working frequently with your product lead, design lead, tech lead, and report up through Angela.

Our program has 9 engineers at the moment, and is continuing to grow over the next few months. We have folks based across the West Coast, and we will continue to value high-quality remote collaboration even once COVID-19 precautions have relaxed.

Culturally, we value:

  • Psychological safety and kind, empathetic communication.

  • Continuous collaboration and collective ownership of our work. We strongly believe in including team members of all levels and backgrounds in decision-making and leadership opportunities.

  • A strong feedback culture - between teammates, with leadership, and between teams who work closely. TASK (Timely, Specific, Actionable, and Kind) feedback is our goal.

  • Agile engineering process, with daily paired programming, quick iteration, and flexibility to change direction. We are major proponents of experimentation and are always looking to improve our process.

  • Sustainable pace and regular reflection on team health. We keep to core 9 - 5 working hours and our virtual workday includes regular breaks and water cooler conversations.

  • Creating opportunities for continued development and career growth. We set aside time weekly for engineers to focus exclusively on learning new technologies and skills to ensure continuous learning.

Additional Product Background
Based on the open source Cloud Foundry project, VMware Tanzu Application Service (or TAS) is a $500 million revenue-generating cloud platform that enables application developers to build and run their applications quickly, easily, and repeatedly. It manages containerization, traffic routing, logging, metrics, and build workflows, so that engineers can focus on what matters most to them -- solving problems for their customers.

VMware Tanzu is also heavily investing in providing strong developer and operator outcomes on top of Kubernetes through projects like Tanzu Build Service, based on kpack, and Cloud Native Runtimes for Tanzu, which builds on top of open source Knative. Our program will enable our strong TAS customer base to interoperate with our Kubernetes-based products and continue to build a strong story with our Tanzu portfolio.
