Software Engineering Manager

The Software Engineering team delivers next-generation software application enhancements and new products for a changing world. Working at the cutting edge, we design and develop software for platforms, peripherals, applications and diagnostics — all with the most advanced technologies, tools, software engineering methodologies and the collaboration of internal and external partners.

What you’ll achieve
As a Software Engineering Manager, you will oversee the delivery of products within budget, schedule and quality guidelines and manage a team responsible for the design, development, testing, integration, maintenance, documentation and support of software. You will interact with project managers, marketing, sales, procurement, quality, legal and end-users to define application requirements and/or selection of partners.

You will:

  • Inspire, motivate, lead and develop a team of software engineers, managing the hiring, staffing and maintenance of a diverse and effective workforce and the career development and performance management of the team

  • Analyze and investigate application engineering tasks, and prepare design specifications, analysis and recommendations

  • Develop innovative solutions to difficult technical problems, which may require ingenuity and creativity

  • Be responsible for establishing clear goals and objectives for the team that are aligned with Dell policies and standards.  

  • Track progress towards the established goals with completion of tasks within the time and cost constraints while ensuring that technical and functional objectives are met. 

  • Develop and provide challenging yet appropriate assignments, evaluating the work, and communicating progress toward career development and goals.  

  • Provide mentoring or enabling training, if necessary, to support the development of the assignments and goals.  

  • Ensure that the team has access to the resources needed to support the assignments and goals. 

  • Interface with senior management to report on project and program milestones and to present project needs and share technical knowledge. 

  • Collaborate cross functionally with employees across the organization, voluntarily sharing information. 

  • Foster a sense of team, teamwork and collaboration.  

  • Be accountable for HR processes and actions.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering team through various SDLC phases using Agile methodology, in delivering software features and enhancements.

  • Drive a culture of customer success by delivering high quality, easy to use products that customers can deploy

  • Participate in customer service escalations to engineering to drive issues to quick and safe resolution

  • Drive decision-making processes to consensus and ensure that steps are taken to actual implementation of product roadmap.

  • Be accountable for the team deliverables and quality, interact with other teams to drive dependencies and integration tasks to deliver commitments on time.

  • Participate in strategic planning and design sessions with Product Management, Engineering Management, Architects, and Operations.

  • Be a mentor to the team members and actively manage performance of the team.

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience

  • Self-Motivated, Enthusiastic, Energetic and Passionate about technology and leading a team. 

  • Ability to articulate technical vision while understanding business requirements, with the ability to constructively debate and collaborate with stakeholders and team members.  

  • Experience working across cross-functional teams. 

  • 6-10 years of software engineering experience

  • 2+ years of managerial or leadership experience

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in a diverse, high performing software development team

  • Ability to apply Software Lifecycle and Quality Assurance methodologies in a cost-effective manner, to bring high-quality products to market on time

  • Ability and Open Mindedness to quickly learn about new development methodologies and cutting-edge technologies in order to enable the team. 

Desirable Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related

  • Understanding of software engineering processes and methodologies

  • Hands on C/C++ in Linux development experience

  • Experience or knowledge on storage products.

  • Experience with distributed systems
