The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

Tanzu Mission control (TMC) is an exciting and fast-growing cloud service that is part of the VMware Tanzu Portfolio. VMware Tanzu Portfolio enables enterprises to adopt Cloud Native technologies and automate the modern application development adoption on any cloud. Tanzu Mission Control is designed to give customers a single pane of glass for all their Kubernetes clusters so they can create, build, use, secure, monitor, scale with ease.

We are looking for a senior manager to lead the team responsible for building the Kubernetes Platform and Fleet services capabilities that allow our customers to manage K8s clusters across cloud providers and on premises installations.  

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

We need a manager and leader who can collaborate with technical leads, product management and other engineering teams to deliver a best-in-class SaaS-Hub Platform and Fleet Services for TMC Product and other offerings in the broader Tanzu portfolio.

This manager will need to be cognizant of their team’s goals and build out specialized plans for individuals to have opportunities for personal/professional growth as well as keeping the team on track with deadlines and milestones for the overall project.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

  • Project Management: You’ll be expected to build a roadmap for your team in collaboration with your product management and engineering counterparts. You will be responsible for executing the roadmap and managing projects to meet deadlines while maintaining a healthy and sustainable team. 

  • Collaboration: You will be collaborating with technical leads, product management, and other engineering teams across VMware to prioritize which features to target and plan out what that development of those features will look like.

  • Process establishment: You’ll be expected to establish and refine processes to achieve high productivity of the team and to ensure high quality of the cloud services the team owns. 

  • Team Growth: You will also be expected to provide guidance to your team members. Helping your team members grow will be an integral part of this role. You will need to understand each member’s strength and identify areas for growth, remove barriers and guide team members to grow their skills and careers.

In the next six months, this team is expected to deliver platform services for SaaS Hub Platform to meet the needs of several feature spoke capabilities partner teams. The team will continue to enhance the fleet management features for TMC product to deliver on the roadmap.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As the manager of the TMC Fleet and SaaS-Hub Platform Team, you will:

  • Perform project planning for the team by understanding the product priorities, team capacity, cross-team dependencies and feature estimate. 

  • Drive and support the architectural and engineering vision for Kubernetes Platform Services to serve the needs of TMC product and multiple Tanzu portfolio products.

  • Plan sprints and ensure sprint goals are met across multiple teams from design, code to production support for multiple microservices. 

  • Review design to ensure architecture is sound and the platform meets the needs for multiple partner teams to build the upcoming features for their SaaS offerings. 

  • Be an effective spokesperson and champion for the platform team and drive the initiatives around engineering efficiency, scale and reliability for continuous improvements.

  • Help the team improve the velocity of shipping software to production without reducing quality.

  • Build a career development plan for each team member and have regular career discussions with team members.

  • Hire high performing engineers to grow the team. 

  • Build a healthy team culture which values customer obsession, strong ownership, delivery on commitment, and continuous learning.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This role will lead and grow a team of approximately 18+ engineers in their day-to-day work with development managers. This role will collaborate with counterparts in the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG), Tanzu Application and Data Services to develop a well-layered, multi-cloud Kubernetes Platform and Fleet Services. 

This role will report to Kotesh Adusumilli, Director of Engineering for VMware Tanzu Mission Control. Kotesh has spent the past 10+ years in full-time engineering management leading teams for multiple products (vSphere, vCloud Director, VCF) and SaaS offerings (VMC, TMC) in VMware. Kotesh has over 20 years of professional software development experience in start-ups and large enterprises across enterprise products, distributed systems and SaaS offerings on multi-cloud.
