Tanzu Mission control (TMC) is a new cloud service that is part of the VMware Tanzu Portfolio, which provides enterprises a single pane of glass for all their Kubernetes clusters on any cloud, and enables them to develop and manage the modern application lifecycle.

We are looking for a passionate Staff Engineer who will guide the technical direction and lead the service design in the Tanzu Mission Control Fleet Services team.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

The TMC Fleet Services team is composed of two teams: Data Services team and Integration Platform team. The Data Services team is responsible for building a platform to stream, process, visualize and draw intelligence from all the data collected from Kubernetes clusters managed by TMC. The Integration Platform team is responsible for expanding TMC capabilities by integrating with other products in Tanzu portfolio.

As a tech lead in the TMC Fleet Services team, you will be responsible for providing technical guidance for both teams. You will guide the Data Services team to build scalable services that can efficiently process big data and provide near real time data access. You will also guide the Integration Platform team to build an extensible integration platform to provide a seamless user experience by connecting multiple Tanzu products together. As TMC evolves from a SaaS product to a SaaS platform, you will guide both teams to build APIs and establish contracts and processes, which enables partner teams in Tanzu portfolio to build new capabilities on top of TMC core services.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? 

  • Refine the vision and  the roadmap of the team by collaborating with the product management and the engineering manager.

  • Lead the design, implementation and release of a few key investments in the team.

  • Ensure the services scale out with the growth of customer adoption.

  • Lead the effort to evolve data services and integration platform services as core services in the TMC SaaS platform.

  • Collaborate with strategic partners in the Tanzu portfolio to provide application lifecycle management.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Mentor and coach the team members to grow both their technical skills and soft skills.

  • Build relationships with partner teams and explore collaboration opportunities.

  • Research new frontiers and provide technical guidance.

  • Guid the team on building scalable services using Kafka and Postgres

  • Lead the design, implementation and release of complex services.

  • Review design documents of the team and ensure the design is sound, extensible and scalable.

  • Collaborate with the engineering manager to ensure on-time service delivery with good quality, and to improve the team's productivity.

  • Take on-call responsibilities to ensure smooth operation of services this team owns.

The hiring manager for this role is Sudheer Gollapudi who manages the data platform team which is part of TMC Fleet services team. The team consists of five engineers and the mission of the team is to build a platform to stream, process, provide query-ability and draw intelligence from all data collected from Kubernetes clusters managed by TMC and build an event hub that connects Tanzu events with customer applications.
