The Power of Innovation: Haruka Discusses Dell for Startups

Haruka T. | Account Manager | Tokyo, Japan

"Where there's a problem, there's innovation."

I'm currently in the Alternative Route to Market (ARM) department, tasked with developing new sales channels. I find the Dell entrepreneurial support program to be a true embodiment of "innovation" for startups. While working with startups across diverse industries, our team encounters numerous "opportunities", which benefit both us and our customers. To transform these "opportunities" into "wins", I collaborate with talented team members. My work is like an exciting "adventure", and I thoroughly enjoy my journey at Dell.

My top 5 words to describe innovation are:

1) Problem

2) Encounter

3) Opportunity

4) Teamwork

5) Adventure

Bringing Innovation to Life:

1) Challenges

There are many challenges for startup companies in Japan. According to a survey conducted by Dell Technologies Japan in May–June 2022 targeting 150 entrepreneurs who started their businesses in Japan within the last five years, results showed that the most significant obstacle during business establishment is securing talent (37%), followed by misguided technology investment (31%). Moreover, 34% of respondents mentioned that receiving advice on technology selection is a challenge they face after establishing their businesses. For startups with limited resources, it is difficult to have a dedicated team for information systems. Because of that, startups cannot avoid technology problems.

2) How We Innovate for Customers:

Dell Technologies created 'Dell for Startups' to support startup companies. Once registered in the program, each startup is assigned a dedicated technology advisor, and we provide discounts on hardware products. Additionally, we extend these benefits to other startups with the same affiliates, including investors and accelerators. Such efforts are unusual within the Japanese hardware industry.

The Small Business Marketing team and our team are working for “DWEN”, we had a contest, and this is at the ceremony for the winners in July 2023.

3) Results:

It has been three months since the launch, and we have already seen a significant number of startups register with us. Moving forward, we plan to organize networking events and facilitate introductions to investors to further support their business growth. Our ultimate goal is to shape the perception that when a startup purchases its first technology, including a laptop, it must be a Dell brand. Under our team slogan, 'Start Up. Scale Up.', we are committed to driving innovation for startups in Japan.
