Why Should You Launch Your Career in Dell's Finance Development Program (FDP)?

Voices from Japan's FDP members

Originally Published: August 17, 2023

The Finance Development Program (FDP) is an accelerated development program for new graduate employees that consists of 4 different rotations over 2 years, MBA-style practical curriculums, case studies, mentoring programs, a structured appraisal and feedback process, special program incentives, and networking activities. Through this structural program, Dell is promoting the development of future global leaders in the finance field.

Today, we’ll introduce two members of Japan's FDP, Keiichi and Makoto. Keiichi was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from a university with a Bachelor of Commerce, he joined Dell Technologies Japan in April 2021. Makoto graduated from a university in Japan with a science and engineering degree, and he joined Dell in 2022!

Immerse yourself in an MBA-style curriculum and four distinct roles over two years:

Keiichi: I have decided to launch my career at Dell's FDP to understand my aptitude and deepen my learning. As a college student majoring in business, I wanted to take advantage of what I had learned, but I didn’t have a clear vision of what I wanted to do in the future. I was attracted to this program because I thought that the combination of MBA-style curriculums and a two-year job rotation would help me acquire basic skillsets and clarify my future role preferences.

Makoto: I have decided to join Dell as an FDP to develop and grow my career as a financial analyst! Not many companies offer a program or graduate role where you do not need prior financial or accounting experience, and I thought it was a great opportunity to start something new! Experiencing four roles was also a reason why I thought this program was so valuable compared to other roles out there. Figuring out what fits you and which path you take is something I was and am still excited about as an FDP.

Embrace growth and career exploration through various job rotations:

Keiichi and Makoto have experienced the following job rotations in the program so far:

1) Consumer Small Business Finance & Operations

  • Supported the Finance Controller, Consumer Small Business Finance & Operations provides analysis, quarterly closing support, and day-to-day promotion of the retail and online business.

2) Professional Services Finance

  • Provided support to business partners on the Deployment/Consulting team, including capturing service revenue and leading cost management projects.

3) Dell Financial Services

  • Managed a variety of projects in the finance department (leasing, rentals, etc.) to create more efficient and effective processes and a team that will be ready to go in the future.

4) Global Business Operations

  • Supported running Japan's overall business by consolidating tracking reports and analyzing the business trends by product and segment levels to identify improvement areas to be managed.

Navigating through ambiguity and change:

Keiichi: Overcoming ambiguity is required for all program participants and is always challenging for me. To beat this obstacle, I try to be proactive and ask "why" to ensure I am doing the right things.

Makoto: One of the challenging parts of the FDP program is rotating to a new role and team every six months. Adapting to a new environment with new team members has been tough, but rewarding when you are able to create value for the new team.

Lifelong learning throughout your career:

Keiichi: Learning the importance of being flexible and accepting changes is my biggest takeaway from this program. Every six months, I worked with a new reporting manager. Each time, I was required to build relationships from scratch and understand the expectations of each manager. This learning experience will help me adapt to various future changes very quickly.

Makoto: The opportunity to learn and work simultaneously has been my biggest takeaway. FDP has helped me understand the importance of this and has made it a habit. Investing in educating yourself can be leveraged in any industry and any career.fdp pic 2

Advice for Potential FDP Candidates:

Keiichi: I think Dell FDP is best place to maximize your career possibilities by establishing your technical skills and knowledge, expanding your global network, and reflecting on yourself in many situations. If you’re interested in becoming a future leader in the global finance field, I highly encourage you to launch your career with us!

Makoto: I would recommend FDP to anyone interested in trying new things and striving to grow their career. If you are passionate about expanding your network worldwide and collaborating with international team members, FDP will be a great fit!
