Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: How Eliel Embraces his Mexican Roots and American Experiences

Eliel Mares | Software System Engineer | Massachusetts, United States

My name is Eliel Mares, and I am a software engineer at Dell Technologies. My role involves creating software to support our incident managers who handle the most impactful 1% of issues that our enterprise customers experience. Recently, my projects have started to incorporate AI, which will enhance our ability to predict and address these critical issues more effectively. I am excited to see what the future holds for Dell and how things evolve with these advancements.

Outside of work, I enjoy working on personal tech projects for my household and learning about AI. I even have a social media account with over 130k followers that revolves around generative AI. Additionally, I love playing pickleball, rock climbing and listening to EDM music. These hobbies help me stay balanced and bring a sense of adventure and rhythm to my life.

My heritage is deeply rooted in the vibrant and rich culture of Mexico. I was born in Mexico, and my family is primarily from the beautiful regions of Oaxaca and Aguascalientes. Growing up, the celebrations and traditions were an integral part of my life. One of my favorite aspects of being Mexican is the way our people celebrate. From the grand parades and colorful festivities of Día de los Muertos to lively and heartfelt birthday parties for someone’s little cousin, each event is marked with the same energy and excitement.

There is a cherished video of my 3rd birthday that perfectly captures this spirit. The day started bright and early, with the house full of cousins running around and my mom and aunts busy cooking in the kitchen. The birthday party lasted until the night, featuring two giant cakes and three piñatas. The joy and excitement of that celebration is unmatched, and I don’t think any of my other birthdays will ever beat it. It’s a beautiful example of how Mexican families come together to celebrate with such warmth and enthusiasm.

When my father, also a software engineer, brought us to the United States, we were the first in our extended family to make this journey. Adapting to a new country while maintaining our Mexican traditions was a delicate balance, especially since we did not have much family here and did not know other Mexican families. At home, we spoke Spanish, cooked traditional meals and celebrated Mexican holidays. However, the lack of a larger Mexican community nearby made it challenging to fully immerse ourselves in our culture.

At school and with friends, I was immersed in American culture. At home, my life was enriched with Mexican traditions. This blending of cultures sometimes led to a tug of war, with feelings of not fully belonging to either one. Over time, I learned to embrace and celebrate this unique aspect of my identity, understanding that I could honor both my Mexican roots and my American experiences.

Growing up in the United States, I often faced the struggle of navigating a dual cultural identity. As a child, my Spanish wasn’t very good, and I couldn’t fully relate to my family’s experiences from Mexico, which made me feel like I stood out to them. At the same time, I struggled to accept my Mexican heritage because it made me feel like I stood out among my peers as well. At school and with friends, I was immersed in American culture. At home, my life was enriched with Mexican traditions. This blending of cultures sometimes led to a tug of war, with feelings of not fully belonging to either one. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time of reflection and celebration for me. It serves as a powerful reminder of the diversity within the Hispanic community. The month highlights the unique experiences and contributions of Hispanic individuals, many of whom share similar cultural identity issues. It is a time to honor the rich history, culture and achievements of the Hispanic community while also acknowledging the challenges we face.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month has evolved for me over the years. Initially, it was a time to learn more about my roots and connect with my heritage. As I grew older, it became an opportunity to educate others about the richness of Mexican culture and the broader Hispanic experience. Now, I see it as a time to inspire younger generations of Mexican Americans to embrace their heritage with pride and confidence.

In my daily life, I strive to integrate Mexican cultural practices and share them with those around me. Whether it's cooking traditional dishes, participating in cultural events or simply sharing stories about my heritage, I find joy in keeping these traditions alive. Hispanic Heritage Month amplifies these efforts, providing a platform to celebrate and educate on a larger scale.

Overall, Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of identity, diversity and unity. It reminds me of the strength and resilience of our community and the importance of preserving and sharing our rich cultural heritage.

Being a part of the Latino Connection Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Dell has been amazing. It has provided a platform to connect with colleagues who share similar cultural backgrounds and experiences. Through this ERG, I have participated in various activities and events that celebrate our heritage and foster a sense of community within the company. And I know I can’t dance well, so I look forward to taking the bachata classes they offer in the future. These experiences have helped me find a greater sense of belonging and appreciation for my heritage.

Latino Connection has been instrumental in helping me bridge my cultural heritage with my professional environment, allowing me to bring my whole self to work and encouraging me to embrace my identity with pride. It’s a testament to the power of community and the importance of fostering inclusive spaces where diverse backgrounds are not just acknowledged but celebrated.
