Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in Mercedes, Texas, which influenced my experience as a Hispanic American daily. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, I decided to stay in town and joined Dell in 1998. I am currently a senior manager in the Customer Success organization and manage a set of project and program managers who provide domestic and global operational governance for some of Dell’s most complex and strategic customers. When not at work, I enjoy running, skiing, cooking, playing all racket sports and spending time with family and friends.
How do you celebrate your culture at home, at work or in the community?
In each of these spaces, I proudly maintain traditions around food, family and the Hispanic cultural involvement of community involvement. I volunteer at several organizations that support Hispanic and diversity initiatives that help underprivileged kids. At work, I make it a point to mentor our future Dell leaders, including Hispanic team members. I currently mentor a young man (even though he is a Texas A&M University graduate!) of Hispanic descent whose goals align to positive work ethics and a focused but healthy ambition.
How has your involvement in the Latino Connection ERG shaped your perspective on the importance of allyship and collaboration across different backgrounds and identities?
The best thing about engaging in Latino Connection is that it automatically allows you to see and be around Dell team members with incredibly rich life and cultural experiences. All Dell ERGs do a great job at promoting cross functional ERG interactions so learning and collaborating with teams across of all backgrounds and interests at Dell is the common practice.
Can you tell us about a personal achievement or project within the Latino Connection ERG that you’re particularly proud of?
I was recently tapped to lead the Project Management Office (PMO) for Latino Connection. The goal is to build a best-in-class PMO that ensures that correct processes are defined, built and most importantly, maintained. The current executive sponsors for Latino Connection are also focusing on a metrics and KPI driven ERG which has made the need for a strong PMO a requirement. Although it is in addition to my day job, the fact that it has allowed me to collaborate with and influence so many strong and dedicated Latino Connection sponsors, leaders and members has been incredible. Their appetite to grow themselves and the Latino Connection in ways that align to the Dell Technologies business strategies is awesome and rewarding!
How has your Hispanic heritage influenced your values and perspectives?
“Others first, self second” is my personal mantra, and it is a result of being raised by strong, proud and committed Hispanic parents. Their ability to blend the positive aspects of their Mexican ancestry with a daily American life has shaped me into a strong and capable Hispanic American.
Can you share a favorite memory that celebrates your Hispanic heritage?
My favorite family tradition is simply an homage to my great grandparents and their life in Mexico. Although I am a native Texan, we always celebrate birthdays by first singing “Estas Son las Mañanitas,” and then follow it up with “Happy Birthday.” For as long as I can remember, it’s been done for every birthday celebrated in my incredibly large family. It was always great to see my grandparents on both sides of our family smile broadly because the kids could sing in Spanish!
