I have been at Dell Technologies for 17 years, all this time in Marketing. I came to the United States 19 years ago to attend the University of Michigan Business School for my MBA and I joined Dell straight out of campus. During my time at Dell, I have worked in the consumer and the commercial B2B marketing teams, as well as in the marketing technology area focused on Customer Relationship Management (CRM) initiatives. Currently, I work in the Services product marketing organization as product marketing lead for Edge and Multicloud Services.
What does International Day of Persons with Disabilities mean to you?
It is a day that truly recognizes a silent majority. A majority of Americans live with some form of disability. Many are not visible. It often feels like we are a small group, however, in actuality, we are a much larger group and its high time that the world takes note of us and our needs. International Day of Persons with Disabilities helps alleviate that gap in understanding and gives people with disabilities a platform to share their lives and to seek a more equitable world from an opportunity standpoint.
What are some misconceptions or stereotypes about disabilities?
People with disabilities won’t be able to do their jobs like others. That we need help. That we don’t live independently and are not self-sufficient. That they need to be pitied. That we are “inspiring” when all we want to be is like everyone else and to live successful and meaningful lives.
Describe your experience in the True Ability Employee Resource Group (ERG).
The True Ability ERG is a great place to make friends and network. When I started to go blind, I connected with some Dell colleagues from the ERG who actually helped me learn about the tools and accessibility features in the technologies I use. They also inspired me to get a guide dog – I got one earlier this year from the Guide Dogs for the Blind. That level of support from other people with disabilities is invaluable.
The ERG provides a great platform for folks with disabilities to come out and talk about their disabilities to a wider audience, educate them, get the support we need from the wider community and also network with other people with disabilities so we can all learn from one another.
What advice would you give to someone with disabilities looking to start their career at Dell?
Don’t let your disability hold you back. Communicate openly with your colleagues and bosses so they know how to best support you to be successful.
