Crafting Clarity, Leading with Empathy: Chitra’s Story of Growth at Dell

Chitra Kumar | Senior Manager, Technical Content Development | India

What first drew you to the field of technical content development, and how has your journey evolved into a managerial role at Dell Technologies?

My journey into technical content development started with a simple question: how can we make technology easier for people to use? Early in my career, I discovered that writing wasn’t just about words, it was about creating information experiences that are simple, modern, and purposeful. The real game-changer for me was learning that empathy is as important as expertise, because when you create with empathy, you’re not just explaining technology, you’re coaching users to play their best game. At Dell, I found the perfect field to grow this vision. I started by focusing on content strategy and innovation, then gradually moved into building scalable teams and mentoring others. Each step felt like moving from player to captain, and eventually into a coaching role, still part of the game, but now responsible for strategy, culture, and outcomes. Today, I lead people in content transformation, AI in documentation, and people-first growth. My leadership philosophy is clear: foster a culture of trust, continuous learning, and excellence, and you’ll build a championship team that delivers every season.

Can you share a bit about your career progression at Dell and any key moments that shaped your path?

I started my Dell journey as a content developer, very much like the origin story of any Marvel main character, learning the craft, mastering the basics, and slowly discovering the bigger mission. From there, I moved into the role of lead for product documentation, which felt like stepping into the “co-star” role, still in the action, but now helping shape the storyline for the team. As the plot unfolded, I transitioned into people leadership, first leading a small crew, and then, a global team. Within eight years, it’s been a true cinematic journey: from content developer to strategic lead, from mentor to people-first leader, building scalable teams and human-centred experiences. One highlight was creating The Knowledge Room: our very own “Sanctum Sanctorum” for knowledge sharing, redefining the way our team learns and collaborates. That milestone helped me shift from focusing purely on documentation to driving content strategy, transformation, and organizational leadership. If I had to sum it up Marvel-style, it’s been like going from an origin story to building an Endgame-level impact, still learning every day, but now with the responsibility of shaping the bigger universe, guiding others, and ensuring the story only gets stronger from here.

How do you maintain work-life balance while leading a team in a dynamic environment like Dell?

Maintaining work-life balance while leading a dynamic team at Dell is like curating the perfect playlist, each track energizes, inspires, and keeps the rhythm flowing. My playlist of balance mixes personal growth, team connection, and a little bit of fun. Professionally, I stay on beat through Employee Resource Group (ERG) participation, peer mentoring programs, and initiatives that build collaboration and skills. We celebrate wins and recharge through quarterly team outings, team-building activities at the office, yearly walking challenge, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, because nothing hits the right note like giving back as a team. Personally, I fuel my growth with leadership books and audiobooks, which are my “secret sauce” for inspiration and strategy, think of them as the Tony Stark-level upgrades that help me lead smarter and with purpose. And when it’s time to recharge, I sprinkle in some pop-culture beats: a little Taylor Swift for motivation, a touch of BTS for energy, or even “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa for that mid-week groove. Balancing work and life aren’t just about dividing hours, it’s about creating a rhythm where the team thrives, creativity flows, and we all feel like the stars of our own music video.

The real game-changer for me was learning that empathy is as important as expertise, because when you create with empathy, you’re not just explaining technology, you’re coaching users to play their best game.

It is like being in a championship league: everyone knows their role, trusts their teammates, and is ready to score the winning goal. The culture? A strategic player who is supportive, focused, and always moving the team forward. The people? Strikers bringing their unique skills to tackle challenges, create opportunities, and score together.
