What My Biggest Internship Challenge Taught Me About Growth at Dell

Hi, I’m a former intern, now an Analyst Project Manager at Dell. I work within Global Services, where I assist clients with programming and managing server deployments. I also maintain communication with them, the Solutions Architect, and the Service Delivery Engineer, who goes on-site to install and configure the servers. I’m also currently studying Industrial Engineering at ADEN University.
At the beginning of my internship, I didn’t know anything about the systems or the platforms needed to do my job, nor where everything was on the site. It was difficult because it was one of my first days and I didn’t know many people. I kept asking questions about the platforms, which really helped me understand how the system works and what to do in my role. I gradually got the hang of it thanks to the support and staying curious.
What steps or strategies did you take to overcome this challenge successfully?
I went wandering around the site and asked questions to other employees in the area to see if they knew or could help me get around, and I eventually got the hang of it. As for the platforms, I kept asking questions about everything because I didn’t know anything about them, and that helped me a lot to understand how the system works and what to do in my role.
How did this experience help you grow professionally or personally, and what lessons will you carry forward?
This experience helped me overcome the ‘I’m new and I don’t know anything’ mindset, and adopt an ‘I’m new and I want to know everything’ attitude. It made me realize that people value a willingness to learn, and it sparked my curiosity about how things work at Dell. This also helped me improve my communication skills, and the lessons I’ll carry forward are that there will always be people who know more than you, even about a single topic. It's always better to ask than to let others think you know when you actually don’t.
