From Mentee to Mentor: The Power of the STEM Aspire Program

My current role is a senior cybersecurity, engineering and operations analyst. I work between the asset management and vulnerability management side. My role entails managing asset oversight and conducting comprehensive application audits across the entire Security Resiliency Organisation (SRO), ensuring systems remain secure, compliant and optimized for performance. I make sure the data is accurate throughout all the various applications and product lines, and verify all audits are completed accordingly.
I am also responsible for the vulnerability management side of our team, for Lab data specifically. This involves identifying, assessing and mitigating potential security risks for the assets to confirm that the vulnerabilities and unauthenticated assets are remediated and patched up accordingly as they come in daily. I contribute to the organisation’s operational resilience and strategic objectives.
What do you like the most about your role?
As much as I love having the flexibility to work between the two different roles, it keeps the work environment interesting. It helps me keep grounded and doesn’t allow for one to get burned out by the same continuous role since it changes constantly. It gives me great proactive, problem-solving skills where I assist in identifying and mitigating the vulnerabilities risks which can arise. The field of cybersecurity is always evolving, offering opportunities to learn about new technologies and threats. This gives us the chance to evolve our knowledge and continuously learn new tips, tricks and methods.

Mentoring isn’t just about giving advice—it’s about creating an effect. Every piece of encouragement, every real-world experience and every shared word of wisdom can become part of a young person’s journey. It’s an opportunity to build a legacy of support and empower the next generation to thrive.

How did the STEM Aspire Program contribute to your development?
The STEM Aspire program helped me build my confidence. It gave me the inspiration to explore a huge range of subjects within my degree and explore the different extra-activity groups, which normally I would hesitate to even join the group.
This program also inspired me to take interest in leadership roles which came as an opportunity to me later in my job. I would never have considered it if I had not heard the incredible stories from the powerful women during my time as a STEM Aspire mentee. I had the courage to put my name down!
Why did you decide to become a mentor for the program?
Becoming a mentor is a deeply personal and full-circle moment for me. As a STEM Aspire mentee during the 2018-2019 session, this program was a positive turning point in my life. At that time, I was in the third year of my degree, feeling burnt out and overwhelmed. Being in a male-dominated field was already intimidating, and with fewer than five girls in my entire year, I often felt isolated. Struggling with a few challenging modules only added to my self-doubt and frustration, making it feel like I was stuck.
Then, I discovered STEM Aspire. Joining the program changed everything. Those few weeks introduced me to a community of support and inspiration. Hearing the incredible stories of women in STEM—their career journeys, challenges and triumphs—was nothing short of eye-opening. My mentor was outstanding, providing guidance and encouragement that helped me overcome my doubts and fears. That experience gave me the courage to keep going, to believe in myself and with the grace of God, I completed my degrees.
This transformation is why I am committed to being a mentor every year for as long as I can. I want to pay forward the support, motivation and belief that were given to me. The thought that my story can inspire a young girl to stay in STEM or give her hope during tough times is incredibly fulfilling. It gives me the power to say, “You’ve got this,” to the next generation of STEM leaders, just as someone once said it to me.
Mentoring isn’t just about giving advice—it’s about creating an effect. Every piece of encouragement, every real-world experience and every shared word of wisdom can become part of a young person’s journey. It’s an opportunity to build a legacy of support and empower the next generation to thrive.
Is there anything else you would like to share about women going into STEM?
STEM is the new foundation of innovation and progress going forward in every industry we can imagine—healthcare, mathematics, science, technology, engineering, software development, data science—the variety of careers is endless! Having more women in STEM allows us all to break the gender stereotype. Remember, you can become a role model for everyone.
