Enjoying a Career in Sales: Hironobu's Experience with Dell Technologies Japan

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Hironobu (Boxin in Chinese), and I was born in Shenzhen, China, but moved to Japan when I was 15 years old. During my high school years, I decided to learn Japanese so that I could communicate with my friends here. After graduating from college, I made the decision to stay in Japan for my career. I joined Dell Technologies Japan in April 2021 as an Inside Sales Representative primarily focused on small or medium-sized business (SMB).

How did you hear about Dell Technologies Japan? What made you decide to join Dell?

My hometown Shenzhen was known as the Silicon Valley of China, and the technology culture has existed there since I was a kid. Growing up, I obviously knew about Dell because of their computers, and I was always interested in diving into the technology industry when I was ready. As I went through the job-hunting process, I noticed that Dell Technologies, compared to other companies, was not just a computer company and they focused on multiple technology solutions. Soon enough, my instinct told me that this was the company I should work in. Going through the interview process is what made me realize that this was the place for me, I could remain true to myself and didn’t have to put on a persona, the leaders were kind and easygoing, and my personality was able to shine.

For the initial two years during your first role, how did you notice your skills develop? Any recognition you received? Overall, how do you feel about that experience?

My first year, I was able to achieve total sales results over 100% and was also nominated for the Best ISR Award. The following year, I also reached my results at over 120% on average. Finally, in the last quarter of 2022, I skyrocketed with new results at 270% achievement! I was and still am very honored to receive the Best Sales Award in my sales division.

Over the years, I’ve learned countless lessons and tips. I learned more about who our customers are and how to think from their perspective. Dell Technologies upholds the importance of customer connection and satisfaction, and I was able to develop these skills in that area. Additionally, I love Dell’s work-life balance! I have been able to improve my work speed by prioritizing what’s important to raise my productivity.

What do you think are the key factors and qualities for high achievement?

I think it’s always important to understand the meaning of your organization’s strategies and operation, so you can find the best way to approach situations and challenges. If you’re just following numbers and data without understanding the reason why and being able to break down what you’re looking at, things can easily become complicated. I always break down the numbers and create ways to manage them on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. This allows clarity and helps me prioritize the daily tasks necessary to progress.

Other than sales achievements and reaching your targets, what are some of your ambitious goals?

I’d like to expand on my sales knowledge to positively influence and improve my sales mindset and organization. Recently, I’ve also gained a strong interest in product marketing and sales strategy. I’d love to pursue a new challenge that involves these roles and work in this area.

What sparks your interest in product marketing and strategy? Is it related to your current work?

As an Inside Sales Rep for two years, I’m well versed in Dell product knowledge and have built great relationships with customers. I’m also very curious about things such as product configuration and how they finalize pricing. If I were involved with the marketing/strategy process, my previous experience would allow me to make a positive impact on our customers.

What would you say about the culture and environment at Dell Technologies?

I LOVE the culture at Dell Technologies in many ways. The environment at Dell makes it easy to gain opportunities to try new things. Additionally, the collaboration and networking aspect is unbelievable. It’s such an easy effort to connect with other organizations and employees from across the globe. I’ve been able to gain new insightful advice through the connections that I’ve formed over the years. In such a diverse working environment, opportunities are everywhere.

What do you like to do outside of work?

On the weekends, I love doing stand-up paddleboarding with my girlfriend and lovely dog, we even go scuba diving sometimes. I also enjoy spending time with my co-workers because the people at Dell are so awesome.
