More Than Numbers: Ranese's Supply Chain Adventures

Ranese Teh | Inventory Management Advisor | Malaysia

Ranese here! Before Dell, I worked as a Customer Data Analyst, diving deep into alphabetic data, customer profiles, and reporting. Transitioning into Inventory Control felt like moving from the ABCs to 123s — a whole new world of numbers. Luckily, those analytical skills I built earlier made the switch smoother, helping me adapt quickly and find my rhythm in supply chain.

When people hear Inventory Control, they usually think of spreadsheets, inventory counts, and maybe a calculator or two. While that’s true (Excel and I are best friends), the role is so much more. Over the past 4 years at Dell, I’ve learned that every number I track is tied to a bigger story — whether it’s keeping global operations running, solving unexpected hiccups, or making sure customers get their products on time. It’s about connecting the dots, not just counting them.

When Spreadsheets Turned into Boarding Passes to Korea

One of my most rewarding experiences was getting the opportunity to travel to Korea for an on-site audit. Suddenly, the processes I usually monitor behind a screen came alive in front of me. Walking through the warehouse, verifying systems, and collaborating with the local team gave me a new perspective. And let’s be honest — balancing compliance checks with trying kimchi for the first time? Definitely an adventure worth remembering. It was also a cultural learning experience that broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for Dell’s global reach.

Where Numbers Meet People

What really keeps me going is the team culture. At Dell, I work with some of the most supportive and friendly colleagues you could ask for. We tackle challenges together, share knowledge, and yes, even find time for team-building activities that usually end in a lot of laughs.

We recently had a heritage hunt in Penang as part of a team-building activity during a leadership visit to Malaysia. What made it memorable wasn’t just the fun and bonding, but also the chance to rediscover our own backyard. Even as Penangites, we realized there were so many hidden stories and details about the city’s history that we had never noticed before. We wrapped things up with a well-earned lunch at Fort Cornwallis — the perfect way to end a day of history, laughs, and bonding.

Our inventory team spans across the globe, but no matter the distance, we live by our slogan: “One Team, One Goal.” It’s proof that while supply chain may be about efficiency and accuracy, it’s also about people, trust, and working together as one.

Curious About Supply Chain? Some Thoughts…

Thinking about stepping into the world of supply chain? Here are a few things I’ve picked up along the way:

  • Numbers matter, but curiosity matters more – always ask “why.”
  • Details are everything – little errors make a big difference.
  • Stay flexible – supply chains don’t always go as planned.
  • Relationships are key – collaboration is where the real magic happens.
