How Isabel Went from Intern to Leading AI Innovation in Tech

Isabel Phillips | Dell UK AI Community Lead | United Kingdom

Can you tell us about your journey and what has shaped your time at Dell the most?

I first joined Dell Technologies in 2021 as an undergraduate intern within the Global Managed Services team, as part of my industrial placement year for my Business Management degree. That experience laid a strong foundation, allowing me to collaborate with colleagues across the globe and gain valuable insight into Dell’s culture and international operations.

Following my internship, I continued working part-time with the team during my final year at university. After graduating, I took a short break to travel and began studying for a part-time master’s degree in digital Innovation and Artificial Intelligence.

Six months later, I rejoined Dell through the NextGen Sales Academy in London. Over 18 months, I progressed from Associate to Enterprise Inside Sales Representative (ISR). My first six months as an ISR focused on AI acquisition accounts, where I worked with fast-scaling start-ups—many backed by venture capital. This was a pivotal time, as I was able to apply my academic knowledge in AI to real-world business scenarios.

In the latter half of my ISR role, I supported Dell’s largest enterprise accounts in the UK (Tier 1 and Tier 2). This phase allowed me to deepen strategic conversations around AI using cases and business outcomes, drawing directly from my master’s research. As I established myself as an AI specialist, my responsibilities evolved to focus on identifying AI opportunities and leading strategic discussions with customers on how AI can drive tangible business value.

In August, I moved into my current position as the Dell UK AI Community Lead. This role is particularly exciting, as I’ve now completed my master’s degree and can combine that academic expertise with my Dell experience to engage strategically with AI start-ups—a rapidly growing and dynamic segment of the UK tech landscape.

What has been your biggest moment and challenge at Dell Technologies?

My biggest moment at Dell Technologies was being awarded the Next Generation Sales MVP for EMEA and South America for FY2025. It was a proud milestone that recognized the hard work, growth, and impact I made during my time at the Sales Academy.

As for challenges, one of the most ongoing and dynamic ones is staying up to date with the rapid pace of technological advancement. The industry is evolving faster than ever, and keeping ahead of emerging trends, especially in AI—is both demanding and energizing. It requires constant learning, curiosity, and adaptability, which I see as essential traits for anyone working in tech today.

What’s been essential to your professional growth and achievements at Dell so far?

Two key experiences have been instrumental to my success at Dell: The Next Generation Sales Program and my internship within the Global Managed Services team. Both provided not only valuable professional development but also the opportunity to build strong relationships across the business. These programs also helped me connect with mentors who’ve played a pivotal role in my journey—offering guidance, sharing insights, and encouraging me to challenge myself. Their support has been invaluable in helping me grow both professionally and personally.

What traits or skills have helped you thrive in your career?

Two traits that have been especially valuable in my journey at Dell are proactivity and curiosity. Being proactive has helped me take ownership of my development and seek opportunities to grow, while curiosity has driven me to continuously learn and stay ahead in a fast-moving industry.

What skills or areas are you currently focused on developing, and how is Dell helping you get there?

Dell has been incredibly supportive of my development and career progression. I’ve grown both professionally and personally through the opportunities, mentorship, and learning experiences the company has provided.

Right now, I’m focused on deepening my understanding of the AI start-up ecosystem and continuing to build my strategic skills to support high-growth businesses in this space.

How do you balance your work and personal life effectively?

I make it a priority to carve out time for myself outside of work. Hobbies like reading and baking help me unwind and recharge. I’m also looking forward to the upcoming ski season. Spending time with family—and our family dog, Bailey—is also incredibly important to me.
