Championing The STEM Aspire Program: Izzy McPoland

Izzy McPoland | Account Executive 2, Direct Sales | United Kingdom

Hi, my name is Izzy. I began my career at Dell Technologies in 2021 after completing my undergraduate degree in Global Business in Madrid and my Master’s in Digital Innovation in Dublin. During my MSc, I secured a place in the STEM Aspire program and was matched with an incredible mentor. This program became a real turning point in my professional journey. It gave me genuine insight into the tech industry and, most importantly, helped me build the confidence to pursue a career in STEM.

Rooted in the principle “if you can see it, you can be it,” the STEM Aspire program is designed to tackle the gender gap in tech by empowering women to pursue careers in IT. STEM Aspire created a safe space where I could ask questions, explore possibilities, and build meaningful connections. It helped me identify where my skills could be best applied and gave me the clarity to carve out a path that matched both my ambition and potential.

Through my mentorship, I had the opportunity to connect with a wide range of people across the business—from technical specialists and account executives to senior leaders and early career professionals. Hearing their stories, learning about their career paths, and understanding the variety of roles within Dell helped me build a more well-rounded view of the tech industry. It made the possibilities feel tangible and attainable. Each conversation added a new layer to my understanding of where I could fit in and how I could bring value.

That experience motivated me to apply for a position at Dell—and in September 2021, I joined the Irish market as a Solutions Engineer. I’ve never looked back! Since then, I co-lead the STEM Aspire program and became a mentor myself, which was very full circle for me.

Today, I’m based in London, working as an Account Executive for Dell’s UK Medium Business. My role is all about understanding our customers’ goals and helping them develop long-term strategies with Dell as a trusted technology partner. In my previous role as a Solutions Engineer, I worked closely with Irish customers to design and implement data center solutions—from defining their workloads to ensuring successful outcomes.

I’m committed to becoming an advocate for other women entering STEM, proving that women can thrive in and shape the future of STEM in Ireland.

Did you start your career at Dell via Stem Aspire program?

Yes, STEM Aspire was my first real introduction to Dell Technologies. While completing my MSc in Digital Innovation, I joined the program and was immediately drawn to the culture, energy, and passion of the people I met. The experience gave me a genuine sense of what working at Dell could be like, and it inspired me to apply for a role. That decision led to the start of my journey as a Solutions Engineer in the Irish market in 2021.

How did the program contribute to your development?

STEM Aspire gave me a head start by providing access to practical development opportunities, ranging from LinkedIn and interview skills workshops to informal networking sessions with people across the business. These experiences helped me better understand what working in a global tech company looks like day to day. More than that, the program gave me the confidence to see where I could add value and how I could shape my own career path.

Why did you decide to become a mentor for the program?

Becoming a mentor for the STEM Aspire program felt like a natural next step. I wanted to give back to a program that had such a meaningful impact on my own journey. My drive to mentor and empower the next generation is grounded in my ambition to be a catalyst for meaningful change in the industry. I’m passionate about showing young women that there’s space for them in tech—not just to take part, but to lead, innovate, and thrive. For me, mentorship is about representation, encouragement, and building a supportive community that inspires confidence and ambition.
