A Sense of Purpose and Fulfillment: Jill's Work with the Community

Jill Sampson | Senior Advisor, Product Marketing | Texas, United States

My name is Jill Sampson, and I am the Senior Advisor in Product Marketing for the Dell Imaging team supporting Lexmark Printers. I started at Dell Technologies in 2004 on the S&P Inbound Queue as a temp, quickly got hired and Dell badged in January 2009, and was one of the few women I saw in my org at that time. Dell has given me so many opportunities, not only to advance my career, but also to engage in so many worthwhile volunteer and mentor program opportunities within our community.

I was one of the first female Large Opportunity Representatives (LORs) and loved that role getting our customers purchasing enough to move them into a commercial segment. It was a challenging role, but something that was very rewarding. I found an amazing mentor and started looking at some of the new products Dell was introducing at that time. Dell Branded Printers were just getting off the ground. This was something very different for Dell, and I felt it would be a great team to broaden my product knowledge and expand my abilities. When a product specialist role opened, I moved into that role.

When Dell decided to stop the Dell Branded line, we picked up Lexmark and Xerox and a Product Line Manager (PLM) role was available. This was a role that really excited me. Not only were there new products, but it was a more challenging role experience… and I’ve been here ever since! Dell has not only given me the opportunity to flourish as a single mother, but also helped me show my son that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. The benefits and opportunities Dell has given me over the years is priceless and I take every opportunity to expand others who are looking for these same opportunities. I work closely with the University of Texas and other schools in their Athletic Externship programs to provide the knowledge base for them to potentially choose Dell as their company of choice when choosing their career path.

Giving back just warms the heart. It can also give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Everyone has something to give – it may just be your time or to lend a hand or take time to listen – Dell really does give us the opportunity to give back in so many ways.

What does the Impact Maker Award mean for you?

This award means the world to me. As a single working mother myself, being able to give back to those who really need assistance is so impactful. Dell not only matches donations, but also gives us the opportunity to give $150 per quarter to our favorite charity organization just by volunteering – it is amazing! I love the work I do for my charity as well as the engagement from our Dell teams.

How do you find time to give back? What’s the most rewarding part of giving?

I make time to give back. I check in with my organization of choice all the time and see what they need. It may be clothing, food for the children while they are on breaks from school, or possibly just working to get one of their cottages ready for the next family in need. Seeing someone in need and being too afraid to ask for help, but helping them find a place where they can relax, feel safe and cared for makes my heart happy. I now have the means to assist in many ways, thanks to a lot of the programs and teammates here at Dell.

Why is giving back so important to you and how does that fit into the Dell culture?

Giving back just warms the heart. It can also give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Everyone has something to give – it may just be your time or to lend a hand or take time to listen – Dell really does give us the opportunity to give back in so many ways. Through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), matching donations, offering volunteer opportunities and allowing us to donate to an organization of our choice once reaching 10 volunteer hours per quarter, that $150 can mean a lot to some groups.

What has been a huge influence in your approach to community service/giving?

My son. Being a single mom has had its trials and tribulations, but when I needed assistance, I found a lot of people and groups to help. When I was able to return the favor, it just made sense! You never know when you or someone you know will be in a situation and they just need a little help.

What have you learned or developed at work that has helped you outside of work?

How to prioritize, juggle many balls, being adaptable, problem solving and networking.

What have you learned about yourself that is surprising from community service?

Most people just want the same thing: to feel safe, to be with family and to provide for their children in the best way possible.

What’s one skill that you are glad you possess when it comes to community service?

The ability to get free stuff – and get people excited about helping those in need. My grandmother had a saying, “If you don’t ask, you won’t get.” All they can do is say no!

What did you want to be when you grew up when you were younger?

Archaeologist – I love rocks and history!

What would you tell your younger self?

Get yourself together and get your finances in order early. Don’t buy dumb stuff. Put family first and just enjoy life!

What’s your favorite tradition that you have?

I love going to Port Aransas beach with my son for July 4th holiday and going to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar in Austin with my son and my sister.

What are some of your hobbies?

Antique shopping and market days around the state. And watching the LONGHORNS … Hook ’Em!

If you can have dinner with anyone in the world, alive or dead, who would it be?

Oprah Winfrey / or my dad

If you could describe Dell in one word, what would it be?

Opportunity
