Continuous Learning and Support: The Drivers of Lakshmi's Career

Lakshmi N. | Senior Consultant | Bangalore, India

I’ve had a very fulfilling 13 years at Dell so far. I’ve built the career I wanted, seized the learning opportunities to further it and embraced the support to still be there for my family. This is my story…

…but first, let me put food on the table!

I left home at 17 to pursue a degree in computer science in 2001. This was a big deal for me, especially leaving home. It was uncommon back then for girls to do so. My college years passed more quickly than I would’ve liked, but I was very excited by the prospect of making a living. This transition, though, hit me like a truck. We’ve all been there, right? I was handling so many responsibilities at such a young age while at a demanding job. But I found purpose. I gave it my all and strove for excellence.

A couple years and a couple jobs later, I found myself at Dell Technologies. I joined as a Data Manager in the Consulting business unit and started supporting large and complex Data-Center migration projects. I was curious, always have been, and I continued to learn about my job and the business. I volunteered to support a colleague based in the United States with a migration project. The success proved pivotal for the entire team! We got recognized for our ability to adapt, collaborate and deliver. It expanded our scope of work. This positioned us centrally in Dell’s growth plans. We were now involved in deep engagements with every Dell Technologies Select customer’s business.

I also broadened my expertise beyond Data-Center Migrations to encompass various cutting-edge technologies in Infrastructure Transformation consulting. What were once buzzwords are now technologies I work with daily – multi-cloud, development, security and operations, artificial intelligence, etc. I’m a Migration Manager, and there’s still a vast ocean left to explore. The Consulting Center of Excellence does a lot, from workforce modernization to business resiliency and more. It’s an exciting place to be!

Dell has a culture which makes getting constructive feedback very easy. My team is a psychologically safe space. Nobody, including me, thinks twice before asking for help. Over the years, it’s become second nature for me to reach out to peers and leaders to discuss problems, ideas and solutions.

How did I get here, you ask?

The one thing that hasn’t changed in 13 years is the exposure you get when working at Dell. From the very beginning, I was put on challenging projects for clients from across the globe. Different clients, geographies and ways of working meant a very steep but also satisfying learning curve. I credit a lot of my achievement today to my mentors and leaders who supported this rapid skilling and constructive feedback!

Feedback is a word that is used and abused everywhere, and I acknowledge that. But from my experience, I can confirm one thing: Dell has a culture which makes getting constructive feedback very easy. My team is a psychologically safe space. Nobody, including me, thinks twice before asking for help. Over the years, it’s become second nature for me to reach out to peers and leaders to discuss problems, ideas and solutions. This has allowed me to stay the course and deliver results as expected, and sometimes even go beyond expectations. Yay to that!

In 2020, I got a chance to participate in a leadership development program for women called RISE. It was their first fully online virtual setup which resulted in hours of laughter, learnings and memories. This program boosted my self-awareness, taught me the importance of setting career goals and helped me build a support system. It was a great experience.

I believe learning is a mindset, and I continue to learn daily from every conversation and assignment.

A little help goes a long way!

Okay, I’ve made it obvious that my career is very important to me. But so is my family. My gem of a husband and my two adorable daughters are my world! And thanks to Dell, I’ve been able to balance my work and family quite well. I have been able to work from home when my situation demanded it. The work hours are flexible, and I have always been supported in ensuring I achieve work-life balance with my family. I’m grateful for the unwavering support from management and the opportunity to unleash my full potential. Together, we've achieved great things. For working mothers, having support in the first few years of their kids’ lives can make all the difference. I’ve not had to leave my job because of the childcare assistance benefits I’ve had access to.

The success I’ve had in my career has been a result of many things, but reminding myself that learning is a mindset, plus the help I’ve had along the way, have been the biggest contributors.
