Leading the Way in Sales: Insights from Gustavo

Gustavo Neto | Senior Manager, Inside Sales Management | Brazil

What’s one fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

A fun fact about me is that I completed a one-year gastronomy course purely as a hobby. I love cooking for other people, and I even keep a running list of new restaurants to try – I’m always exploring new food spots.

If you had to describe your personality in three words, what would they be?

If I had to describe my personality in three words, I would say I am curious, determined, and attentive.

What inspired you to start your career in sales, and what led you to Dell?

I graduated in Marketing, and early in my career I worked closely with Sales teams. Once I understood the commercial dynamics — building relationships, creating competitive advantages, and driving real customer impact — I immediately knew this was the right path for me. I’ve always had a communicative, relationship-driven profile, and Sales became a natural place to develop it. I’m also very comfortable with the accountability and pressure that comes with the role; I genuinely see pressure as a privilege, and ambitious goals have always motivated me. What led me to Dell was a long-standing connection. In my first job as an Account Manager, I supported companies that partnered with Dell. For more than six years, I worked closely with Dell from the outside, and during that time I grew to admire the company’s culture, philosophy, portfolio, and strategy. Joining Dell became a long-term goal — and when the right opportunity came, I turned that goal into reality. Today, I’m truly proud to be part of this organization.

How did the NextGen Sales Academy influence your career path and prepare you for leadership?

The NGSA has profoundly shaped — and continues to shape — my leadership style. I still remember my interview with our global leader and how proudly he spoke about the individuals he once hired as individual contributors who later grew into leaders within the organization. That example stayed with me. As we focus on developing young talent and nurturing future sales leaders who grow within our own culture, I feel both proud and grateful to be part of this mission. That mindset plays a major role in how I lead today.

Can you share a defining moment in your career that shaped your leadership style?

A defining moment in my leadership journey happened at the very beginning of my career, when I was hired as an Account Manager with no sales experience — simply because someone saw potential in me. At 23, I relied heavily on colleagues who voluntarily coached me both technically and commercially, helping me grow and succeed quickly. That experience taught me the power of trust, mentorship, and collaboration. It’s why today I feel a strong responsibility to “give back” and create the same supportive environment for new talent at Dell Technologies.

What leadership principles guide you when mentoring your team?

The leadership principles that guide me are lead by example, learn every day, and selflessness. I set high standards through my own actions, stay curious and open to continuous learning, and prioritize the team’s success above my own.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself and the industry while working at Dell?

The most surprising thing I’ve learned is how adaptable I am — both in embracing new industry trends and navigating very different market challenges. Working at Dell has shown me that I can learn quickly, pivot confidently, and thrive in environments that are constantly evolving. This adaptability is essential in an industry where innovation and change never stop.

What’s a meaningful part of your story that your colleagues might not know?

One important part of my life that doesn’t always show up at work is that I’m a father to a daughter. She is Sofia. We’re partners in our daily routine — we swim together, we walk with the dog, we paint, play games, cook together, travel together. I do her hair, from brushing to curls and even straightening it, I take her to doctor’s appointments, keep track of her first milestones, and plan our next little adventures. Being with her is a daily exercise in presence. When we’re together, the outside world fades away, and nothing matters more than being fully there in that moment.

What’s one hobby or interest outside of work that surprisingly helps you in your job?

One hobby that truly supports my work is sports. I’ve always been active and curious about trying new disciplines. In 2022, I had a serious leg injury that forced me to pause for a while, but in 2025 I slowly began my comeback — running again, swimming while my daughter was in class, and eventually building the cycling base I needed for a triathlon. This November, I completed my first triathlon. Sports help me maintain balance: I eat better, sleep better, and manage stress more effectively. Training across three disciplines requires discipline, consistency, and commitment — qualities that directly influence how I show up and perform at work.

If you could have dinner with any tech innovator (past or present), who would it be and why?

On this question I would actually choose two. First, Santos Dumont. I’ve always been fascinated by his story — a Brazilian inventor who developed the first practical dirigible and played a crucial role in the invention of the airplane. His creativity, curiosity, and relentless experimentation have always inspired me, and he remains an important national reference in Brazil. Second, Michael Dell. As someone committed to growing within Dell, meeting the person who created the company I’m proud to be part of would be invaluable. I’ve read his books and followed his journey, but accessing his perspective firsthand — his global vision and his experience building and scaling a technology leader — would be incredibly impactful for how I execute my role today.
