Michaela's Impactful Career Journey in Sales

Michaela Petrikova | Account Executive, Inside Sales | Slovakia

My journey at Dell Technologies began alongside my university studies. In the final year of my higher education, I decided to leave my job at a smaller company in the logistics industry and search for something new. I had always wanted to use foreign languages in my work, and some of my classmates were already working at Dell. I thought this was a brilliant opportunity to kick off my career, so I decided to follow their lead. In 2018, I applied for a Talent Acquisition (TA) intern position.

I remember that the interview process was quite serious, and I could tell they were making careful decisions between candidates. However, I somehow felt that I was in the right place. There was no doubt in my mind. I was thrilled when they chose me for the position! I could communicate in English and German on a daily basis while doing my job and also having fun with my colleagues. What a dream combo!

My year of experience in the hiring process, searching for the right candidates for the Sales teams in Germany and Austria, taught me a lot about professional communication. I saw firsthand how such a large company operates and learned how to overcome the fear of rejection - an essential skill in sales roles. After nearly a year, I had to leave to finish my thesis and complete my final exams.

Once I graduated, I attended some interviews for different roles at two different companies. I liked both and received offers. But how did I end up in Dell Sales? I really wanted to continue in TA, but there was no room for more full-time employees at the time. I couldn’t imagine myself handling a sales job, as I felt I wasn’t experienced enough. However, my manager in TA supported me to at least try the interview for a sales role. Additionally, one manager I had helped with hiring also encouraged me to give it a try. So, I decided to try it, and I’ve stayed in Sales ever since!

The motivation was to work with international teams, use German daily and learn more about technology and products. My first sales role was called Inside Sales Representative (ISR) in the Consumer Chat team. In this position, I answered all kinds of questions from customers who were considering purchasing Dell products. I prepared quotes for them and supported them throughout the entire process. After one and a half years, I decided I wanted to develop my sales skills further, so I applied for a more senior position as an ISR in the Small Business Chat team.

If you are driven and motivated to communicate with customers, it doesn't matter if you don't feel 100% confident in IT products or another technical knowledge. All of this can be learned by doing. A positive mindset, belief in yourself and continuous skill development lead to great results!

Although this role was similar to my previous one, I had to learn a lot of new information about business products and processes with companies, different conditions and more. I was able to participate in larger projects. In the Chat team, I learned a lot about the technical side of our products, thanks to the curious customers who would ask me detailed questions.

After another year and a half, I felt prepared to move forward and applied for a role as an Inside Sales Account Manager in the Acquisition team. The core responsibilities of the job were similar, but I had to switch from an inbound to an outbound mindset, which requires a different strategy. This was the time when the experience of dealing with customer rejections began - when I started acquiring new customers.

Up until then, I was used to dealing with customers who were already interested in Dell. However, after a short time, I adapted to the new situation. I realized that this experience could also benefit my personal life, as I stopped taking things too personally. We were a great team and had a lot of fun at work.

I wanted to grow further so after a year and some months, I decided to apply for a Large Opportunity Representative role. I was deeply interested in this position and prepared myself as best I could. The key responsibility of this role was managing larger projects and developing relationships with higher-potential customers in the small business area. I liked this role the most, particularly because of its variety and the opportunity to learn new things, such as collaborating with distributors, partners and their account managers.

After nearly a year in that position, our organization underwent a structural change, and I am now working as an Inside Sales Account Executive. This new role combines aspects from my previous positions, with the main focus on gaining new customers and reactivating existing ones. I am excited to further develop my skills and explore additional opportunities in Sales. I appreciate the career growth possibilities, and the trust placed in each of us. I have the autonomy to manage my daily routine and thrive in a flexible work environment.

Skills and Development

How did you develop the necessary skills and expertise for your role over time?

Practice, practice, practice and never give up, even when I don't succeed.

How has Dell contributed to your development?

Dell offers programs focused on both personal and career development not only globally, but also across our Bratislava site and within the sales department. I have participated in two of them. The first was the Sales Talent Academy, where I had the opportunity to showcase skills that I don’t use daily and learn more about our business from a different perspective. The second program, the Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) Academy, helped me expand my knowledge in the more technical areas of our business.

Additionally, about two years ago, I found a mentor who has been incredibly helpful in guiding me to find new ways to manage work-life balance, overcome personal challenges and navigate various aspects of my career. I also benefit from coaching sessions with our coach, who I truly admire and find inspiring.

Challenges

What were some of the biggest challenges that you faced during your career progression, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was, as already a few times mentioned, the fear of rejection. I am the type of person who used to take the rejections personally. Sales makes you feel more confident in this type of situation and when there is a rejection, you try a second, third and maybe fourth time too. It makes you stronger and your personality can grow. The competition is high because our team is not small. You need to think outside the box and show something special about you.

Advice and Relationships

What advice would you share to someone starting their career in IT sales?

Believe in yourself - you don’t have to meet 100% of the requirements for every position you're interested in. If you have the will and passion, you can learn a lot and develop talents you may not even have known you possessed.

What role have mentors or sponsors played in your career progression?

Thanks to my mentor, I was able to prepare better for my applications and gain a deeper understanding of the business and the decisions made by senior management. This has allowed me to adapt more effectively to my current role.

Personal

How do you manage your work-life balance?

It is important to have a structured and scheduled day so that I can complete all my tasks on time. If I ever feel overwhelmed or temporarily demotivated, I talk about it with my boss, mentor or coach and ask for help to ensure it doesn't affect my personal life. I dedicate my working hours to work, and my free time is reserved for personal life. I know it’s not always easy, but it is possible if you set clear rules for yourself.

Life at Dell

What do you enjoy about working at Dell Technologies?

I appreciate the company culture, its focus on inclusion, the international environment and the variety of different specializations. I am inspired by real people here - colleagues and leaders from whom I can learn and meet personally daily.

Are you involved in any activities at work?

I enjoy participating in and helping organize volunteering activities or roundtable discussions with external guests as well as helping with hiring initiatives.

A positive mindset, belief in yourself and continuous skill development lead to great results!
