From Music to Motherboards: Dumitru’s Career Change at Dell Technologies

Dumitru Gotonoaga | Inside Solutions Architect | Romania

How would you describe your journey at Dell Technologies so far?

My journey with Dell Technologies started with a moment of self-reflection. For years, I worked multiple jobs, mostly chasing financial goals without a clear sense of what I truly enjoyed. Around the age of 27, I realized it was time to shift focus—not just toward money, but toward passion. With a degree in Applied Informatics and a Master’s in Business Entrepreneurship, I decided to pursue a career in IT, the field that excited me most.

The interview included an in-person presentation on AI, and from the moment I stepped into the office, I felt a sense of belonging. The atmosphere was warm, the people were friendly, and I immediately felt at home. A few days later, I received the offer, and I was genuinely excited to focus on a role that aligned with my interests.

After 16 weeks of intense learning, collaboration, and growth, I completed the EMEA Dell Technologies Presales Academy. The program was a true accelerator, offering deep insights into Dell’s technology stack and helping me refine how I design solutions that make a real impact for customers. I’m especially grateful to the mentors and teammates who made the experience both challenging and enjoyable.

After graduating, I volunteered to become an assessor for new hires. I found the process fascinating—being assessed was a memorable part of my own onboarding, and now I get to help others while continuing to learn and meet new people.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that continuous learning is key. It’s okay not to understand something immediately—everyone learns differently, and persistence pays off. I’ve also learned to focus on outcomes rather than features, translating technical capabilities into performance, resilience, security, and cost benefits that matter to customers. Simplicity is powerful, and using clear language and visuals helps convey value effectively. Most importantly, collaboration across teams, mentors, and specialists is essential to align scope, manage risks, and move forward with confidence.

Looking back, what have been the defining moments in your career so far?

One of my proudest achievements was earning my ISM certification before the bootcamp even began. It taught me discipline and focus and gave me a strong foundation for what was to come. The final exam and roleplay were particularly challenging, as they required me to apply everything I had learned to a real-world case study. It was tough, but it proved that I could turn theory into practical solutions.

Another significant moment was stepping into the role of assessor. Participating in “hot seat” sessions with new hires and trainers allowed me to provide clear, constructive feedback on their deliverables. It was a rewarding experience that helped me grow both professionally and personally.

What’s the culture like at Dell Technologies, and how does your team embody it?

The culture at Dell Technologies is deeply collaborative. People genuinely support one another, and it’s easy to ask questions and get help when needed. There’s a strong sense of teamwork—successes are shared, and we plan, solve problems, and celebrate together.

Customer focus is at the heart of everything we do. We work toward clear outcomes that align with customer goals, and every decision is made with their success in mind. The environment is respectful and inclusive, where different perspectives are welcomed and every voice matters. There’s also a strong growth mindset here, with plenty of opportunities to learn, try new things, and improve through feedback.

What advice would you give to someone just starting at Dell Technologies?

If you’re just starting at Dell, my advice is to ask questions early and often. Don’t wait—clarify your goals, understand the processes, and find out who can support you. Take time to meet your team and learn what each person does so you can collaborate effectively.

Make the most of the enablement resources available. Dive into the training, read the playbooks, and practice demos. Keep track of your progress by documenting your work—notes, templates, and checklists can save you time and effort. Shadow experienced colleagues to learn how they handle discovery and objections and manage your calendar wisely by blocking time for learning, deep work, and follow-ups.

Building relationships is key. Be responsive, helpful, and follow through—trust grows quickly in this environment. And above all, keep learning. Technology evolves fast, and staying curious will help you stay ahead.

How has Dell Technologies supported your growth and development?

Dell provides an incredible range of resources that make it easy to keep growing. From structured learning paths to hands-on labs and roleplay opportunities, everything is designed to prepare us for real customer interactions. I also receive regular guidance and feedback from mentors and specialists, which helps me improve quickly and see my progress clearly.

Right now, I’m focused on earning a certification in networking concepts and features. I’m also working on sharpening my ability to give constructive feedback as an assessor and improving my presentation and public speaking skills. My goal is to explain technical ideas clearly, keep feedback practical and helpful, and present with confidence—always keeping conversations simple and focused on outcomes.

What’s your secret to balancing work and life?

Outside of work, I’ve always had a creative side. I used to play bass guitar in a metalcore band from Chisinau called Before the Reign, and we even toured Romania together. Later, I switched to drums, and one of my favorite memories is playing “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi at my own wedding.

Music, family, and personal growth help me stay balanced and energized. I believe that maintaining harmony between work and life is essential—not just for productivity, but for happiness and long-term success.
