Start Your IT Career at Dell: Niamh Daly’s IWISH-Inspired Journey

Niamh Daly | Software Engineer 2 - IT | Dublin, Ireland

Niamh's Experience at the IWISH STEM Event

How did you first connect with Dell Technologies? Share how your experience shaped your journey.

My name is Niamh, and my first interaction with Dell Technologies was in 2017 when I attended the IWish conference in Dublin as a secondary school student. During the event, I had the opportunity to speak with several Dell employees and learn about the diverse range of opportunities the company offers. I left the conference feeling inspired and motivated about the possibilities ahead.

Later, while pursuing my undergraduate degree in Data Science, I was offered the chance to participate in an internship. I was fortunate to secure an internship as a Data Analyst at Dell Technologies, and that’s where my real journey with the organization began. After completing a seven-month internship, I gained invaluable experience and an eagerness to further develop my skills.

When I returned to college, I became a Dell Technologies Campus Ambassador. This role allowed me to share my experiences with fellow students during events like “Dell on Tour” and college-organized activities, where I spoke about my time at Dell and the incredible opportunities it provides.

After earning my degree, I rejoined Dell, this time as a graduate member of the IT Development Program (ITDP). Each step along the way has played a vital role in shaping my path, and I’m excited to continue growing and contributing with Dell Technologies.

What is your current role?

I currently work at Dell Technologies as a Software Engineer II within the IT Development Program (ITDP). This program offers an excellent opportunity for graduates to enter the workforce while exploring different roles within a well-established organization. Through structured rotations, participants gain hands-on experience by working with various teams for set periods, enabling deeper insights into diverse roles and career paths. This framework helps graduates determine the direction they want to pursue post-program.

I’m currently on my second rotation, where I’ve had the privilege of working as a Business Intelligence Analyst. This role has provided valuable experience in data analysis and strategic planning within the IT organization. Beyond my core responsibilities, I am actively involved in several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and committees at Dell. These initiatives enable me to network and learn from colleagues across departments, broadening my perspective and connections within the company. It’s been an incredible way to engage with Dell’s diverse community and explore new opportunities.

What excites you the most about your role?

What excites me most about my role is the incredible people I have the privilege to work with. Every day is a chance to learn, and being surrounded by supportive colleagues who are invested in my success makes continuous growth so much more achievable. I work on a global team, collaborating with individuals across different offices, countries, and time zones, which adds a dynamic and enriching dimension to my experience.

Who has inspired you the most in your career journey?

Throughout my career journey, I have been most inspired by the leaders and mentors I have been fortunate enough to work with. My manager, Matt Wade, has been a consistent source of inspiration. His unwavering belief in my potential, even during times when I doubted myself, has empowered me to take bold steps and view challenges as opportunities for personal growth.

What has been your proudest moment so far in your career?

My proudest moment so far in my journey has to be winning the overall prize at my college’s final-year Computing Project Showcase for my final-year project. The project required immense hard work and determination, and I felt incredibly proud to receive such prestigious recognition for my efforts!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in tech?

An important piece of advice I was given when I first started in Dell was to 'always ask questions'. You are not going to know everything or even be expected to know everything when you first start out. So, take this as an opportunity to continue to ask questions and soak up all the knowledge that is being given!

Why are events like IWISH so important?

Over the past several years, I have participated in numerous events and initiatives led by Dell Technologies, and I continue to recognize their vital role in inspiring individuals to pursue their interests and consider careers in STEM. For example, the IWish event ignites curiosity in teenage girls still exploring their career paths. By attending, they discover the vast opportunities available in STEM and gain valuable insights into its real-world applications through conversations with industry representatives.

Similarly, initiatives like 'Dell On Tour' provide college and university students with direct access to Dell employees. These events offer guidance on internship opportunities, CV writing, and interview tips, equipping students with practical knowledge from industry experts. The sessions are consistently well attended, reflecting the significant value they offer.

This year, I had the privilege to serve as a mentor in Dell’s STEM Aspire program. Targeted at second-year female university students in STEM disciplines, this program offers personalized mentoring sessions and engaging networking opportunities. It’s an incredible initiative that creates meaningful connections and inspires the next generation of STEM leaders. These events and programs not only offer exciting opportunities for students but also provide enriching experiences for the Dell representatives involved, making a lasting impact on all participants.

What would you say to encourage more females to enter the STEM field?

I believe anyone curious about STEM should attend as many events as possible, such as IWish. STEM is all about curiosity, creativity, and the drive to make a difference. It’s essential to ask questions, explore the wide range of opportunities available within STEM, and enjoy the process!

What do you think are some of the biggest misconceptions about a career in IT/STEM?

I personally have not encountered many misconceptions about a career in STEM, which I credit to attending STEM events from a young age. Dell has been instrumental in explaining and promoting STEM careers to young students. While I’ve always loved STEM subjects, I also enjoyed exploring languages and creative disciplines. This combination inspired me to pursue an undergraduate degree in Data Science, which blends numerical analysis and problem-solving with creative thinking and communication skills. These skills enable me to interpret data effectively and present insights in meaningful ways. STEM is an incredibly broad and dynamic field, offering a wide range of opportunities that welcome diverse interests and skill sets.

Outside of work, what else do you enjoy?

Outside of work, I enjoy photography and have had several opportunities to practice my hobby by capturing events held at the Dublin office over recent months. Additionally, I am pursuing a master’s degree in Cybersecurity, which has been an exciting and enjoyable way to explore a new field within STEM!
