Fueled by Curiosity: Bao Shin's Life as a Software Engineer at Dell

Bao Shin Yeo | Software Engineer | Singapore

From Numbers to Code: My Unexpected Pivot

I’m Bao Shin, a Software Engineer working on the Dell Automation Platform. When I joined Dell Technologies in 2023, I was fresh out of Singapore Management University (SMU) with a double major in Accountancy and Data Science & Analytics—two fields that taught me how to think critically, but didn’t quite satisfy my itch to build. I’ve always been drawn to solving problems and creating things that make a real-world impact. That’s why I made the leap into software engineering—a move that felt risky at the time, but deeply right. I haven’t looked back. Software engineering gave me a space where creativity meets logic, and where every line of code has the potential to simplify someone’s life. The moment I saw how automation could untangle complexity, I knew I’d found my path.

Engineering at the Edge: Life on Dell NativeEdge

Today, I’m proud to be part of the team behind Dell’s edge computing solution, Dell NativeEdge—which means I get to say I’m working on the “cutting edge” of technology, and it’s actually true (pun intended). Our team builds features that interact closely with hardware and enable the next wave of AI infrastructure. There’s a wide variety of development work, from cloud infrastructure to containers and VMs, and even some hands-on interaction with hardware. I love the breadth of opportunities and the supportive environment at Dell. Engineers are encouraged to take ownership of meaningful projects and to learn from incredibly talented colleagues. I’ve felt that empowerment firsthand. It’s a place where you’re supported to grow, no matter your title or experience level.

Climbing the Curve: Transitioning to a New Field

Transitioning to software engineering was an uphill battle, the learning curve was steep, but I found growth at every turn. Curiosity became my greatest tool: asking questions (even the “silly” ones), staying open to feedback, and embracing the unknown. I’ve been fortunate to work with teammates and mentors who are always willing to share knowledge, guide me through complex problems, and encourage experimentation. The culture here makes it easier to grow, even when you're the most junior in the room. If you're thinking of making the leap, I’d say, “Do it! But pack snacks for the learning journey.” Transitioning to a new field is tough, but with the right mindset, they’re also super rewarding.

Beyond the Code: Finding Community at Dell

What surprised me most about Dell wasn’t just the innovation—it was the sense of belonging. Here, community isn’t an afterthought; it’s part of the culture. Through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), I’ve connected with colleagues across departments. Want to get involved in a green initiative? There’s a group for that. Looking for ways to keep your fitness in check? Dell’s got employee exercise groups. And if you’re passionate about empowering women, Women in Action is all about advocacy and support. These groups have helped me build friendships and feel truly connected to the company. Dell also actively promotes volunteering and social impact, making it easy to give back—whether it’s lending a hand at a local charity or joining sustainability efforts. It’s a meaningful way to recharge, have fun, and make a difference alongside colleagues from all walks of life.

Reflecting on this journey, I’ve learned that growth begins where comfort ends. Dell has given me the space to learn, contribute, and connect in ways I never expected. I’m excited for what’s ahead—because here, every day is a chance to build something meaningful, with people who inspire me.
