Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: Ivan's Experience at Dell Technologies

About Me: 

I was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, and I’m 32 years old. I grew up playing baseball and lived in Monterrey until I finished high school. I then moved to the U.S. to pursue a bachelor’s degree. I went to college at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, where I graduated with a degree in Finance. Eventually, I got an MBA with a concentration in Finance also from Sam Houston State University. I’m currently part of the Special Pricing team at Dell Financial Services.

My Experience in the Hispanic/Latino Community at Dell: It has been wonderful to find and connect with so many Hispanic/Latino professionals here at Dell. We share certain commonalities right off the bat, such as places where we or our families are from, cultural aspects and traditions. However, this whole experience wouldn’t be complete if we stopped at only what we have in common. It is just as great to learn more about the nuanced variations of our cultures and traditions across the Hispanic/Latino spectrum.   Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) do a tremendous job of making Dell a place where team members can feel included and be themselves. There truly is an ERG for everyone out there. They are great places not only to connect with people with similar backgrounds, but just as importantly, places to learn about others with different backgrounds from our own. Throughout my time at Dell, every team I’ve been part of has valued diversity and inclusion and has been deliberate about continuing to foster this element of Dell’s culture.   I’ve been a member of the Latino Connection ERG since I joined Dell, and I just recently took over the Finance Lead role for the Community and Culture pillars. The Latino Connection team does an exceptional job putting together events that shine a light on many aspects of Hispanic/Latino culture. It’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day work routine, and, to me, these kinds of events are a great way to pause, connect with amazing colleagues and reconnect with my roots, as well as learn from other aspects of the Hispanic/Latino culture.

Advice for Young Hispanic/Latino Professionals Looking to Start Their Career at Dell:

Get involved as early and often as you can. Find the groups that interest you the most and join them. It truly adds a lot to the experience of working at Dell to be able to connect with colleagues from diverse teams, participate in events and give back to the community.

What I Wish Others Knew About Hispanic Heritage:

That it is an incredibly warm and welcoming culture. It is a culture that values family and community, and we are always willing to lend a hand to those who need it.
 
What I Love Most About My Heritage:

The sense of community and always trying to bring people together is something I will take with me wherever I go. This can be found in different shapes and forms throughout Hispanic/Latino culture. In my case, I’m from Northeast Mexico, and grilling is the way we do it. We love to fire up the grill at the slightest opportunity and call everyone over. But the food is usually just an excuse. What truly matters is getting friends and family together, catching up, and sharing a good time. So, yes, I try to fire up the grill and have friends and family over as much as I can.
