Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Ren, and I was born in Japan. When I was 6 years old, I lived in Upstate NY for 1 and a half years. Then, I returned to Japan until I finished middle school. I eventually returned to the US to study abroad for 5 years. In 2013, I joined Dell Technologies Japan as an Insides Sales Rep. Then in 2017, I switched my role to Sales Strategist and Planner, and then Finance where I supported Sales Executives for about 3 years. After my time there, I joined the Finance Rotation Program (3-year development program). Finally in 2022, I internationally transferred to the US.

I heard you received several big awards like “Chairman Club” as an Inside Sales Rep. To accomplish these high achievements, what did you focus on most?
I focused on putting myself in the perspective of my customer’s, acting as if I am a member of their company. This allowed me to think about what information would help them succeed, which made me care a lot about prompt and accurate communication. Also, being fully transparent helps me gain trust from the customer.

What did you learn from your transition to Sales Strategist and Planner from Inside Sales? Any challenges? There was so much to learn as a Sales Strategist and Planner (SSP), and it certainly was a struggle at the beginning because I did not have a finance or consulting background. However, I did have Sales experience at Dell and thought with a Sales mindset. Soon enough, I was able to become a trusted business partner for the Sales leaders. This helped bridge the gap between Sales and Finance/Operation.
What does the Finance Rotation Program (FRP) look like? FRP is a global development program that provides breadth of experience for future CFO leaders. During this time, you have the opportunity to switch between 3 different roles within 3 years. One of the great benefits of the program is that you will establish a big global network. As a participant, you will meet great FRP peers across the world and engage with top Executives throughout the program. Also, the amount of experience you can get within 3 different roles is priceless. There are even possibilities to experience international transfers, just like myself!

What was your experience like during your three rotations? I would say that it’s certainly a challenging environment because you are placed in a stretched assignment, and only have a year to contribute to the team. It requires you to work fast paced to make an impact, while also participating in skill development classes and networking events. However, you will feel very proud of the life-long skills that you’ve learned and the connections you’ve built along the way.
What is your current goal and future ambition? Now that I am in the US, I would like to make my experience here as rich as possible. I want to build strong networks and learn from this diverse environment. When I get back to Japan, I strive to be “the bridge” between Global and Japan to help the business grow.

How do you see flexibility and work-life balance at Dell? Dell Technologies has a great environment, and I cannot ask for more. With the capability and clear performance expectations from the leaders, I can focus on working towards my goal while supporting my family at the same time. It is a privilege to be able to pick up my son from day care every day or even take him to the doctor’s office when needed.
What would you say to future employees on taking advantage of the environment at Dell Technologies? You need to own your career. There are so many great leaders at Dell that actually supports your career growth in the company. Being able to proactively communicate and network in a company this size will blossom your career into anything you want, just like myself.
