Adaptability, Problem-Solving, and Execution: Seamus’ Recipe for Success at Dell

Seamus Jones | Director of Technical Marketing Engineering | United States

What inspired you to join Dell, and how has your journey here shaped your skills and career in ways you didn’t expect?

When I joined Dell in 2001 in UK and Ireland sales, I was really excited by the speed at which Dell operates. By focusing on a customer’s problems, we are able to find creative solutions to solve even the most difficult of customer challenges.

What’s one skill or strength you’ve brought to Dell that you feel has made a real impact on your team or the company?

In the past 20+ years at Dell, the skill I've consistently relied on is problem solving. Whether it is turning complexity into clarity by breaking down complex issues, finding the crux of the issue, or creating actionable results to drive cross-team alignment between divergent priorities from product groups and partners (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, VMWare or other) and navigating that alignment to a positive outcome. My problem-solving skills have helped me to simplify complexity, build scalable customer focused solutions, align diverse teams and deliver customer focused outcomes, all of which amplify Dell’s impact in the market.

If your Dell experience were a recipe, what would the key ingredients be?

Well, considering my career path has taken multiple roles in Sales, Learning & Development, Marketing, Product Management and now Technical Marketing Engineering, and that I’ve been able to live and contribute in both Ireland & the United States, I would say that it would be a slow cooked career with plenty of ingredients.

Seamus’ Career Stew:

  • 1 cup of adaptability – makes everything blend smoothly, no matter the challenge or new technology.
  • 2 heaping scoops of problem solving – gives creative structure and delivers a final product worth serving to a customer.
  • 1 dash of risk – this spice keeps things interesting and creates interest in the results.
  • 3 healthy springs of collaboration – the best recipes are shared, and every flavor is stronger when combined with others.
  • A generous dash of curiosity – the seasoning that ensures I experiment, taste and adjust until I’m happy with the result.
  • 2 handfuls of execution – a great idea half-baked doesn’t give the best results.  Focusing on the objective and doing it to completion make for a much better outcome.
  • A full pint of Guinness – has two meanings, first is patience: career success can’t be rushed and just as a proper pour takes time so does building results and genuine relationships.  The second point is to celebrate our successes: it is important to share the achievement and wins with others.  All too often we rush into the next challenge and don’t pause and celebrate together.
  • Final ingredient would be resilience – this ensures that no matter the temperature I work to keep it together when the heat is on high.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned while working at Dell, and how has it influenced the way you approach your work?

I learned early in my career that a positive mindset toward adaptability fuels growth. In a company like Dell that is continually re-inventing itself to be on the bleeding edge of customer needs, change is a constant and by being flexible, building resilience through results, and embracing new challenges outside of your current comfort zone, you will stretch your expertise into unfamiliar areas.

How has Dell’s culture of innovation and collaboration helped you grow both personally and professionally?

Dell rewards execution and our innovative spirit have pushed me to stay focused, explore new ideas, and grow as a problem solver in an ever-changing industry. The collaborative environment has helped me sharpen communication skills, build strong relationships across teams, and develop confidence in leading initiatives. The last 2+ decades of diverse experiences have fueled both my professional development and my personal growth.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to build a career at Dell, based on your own experience, what would it be?

I would encourage people on the importance of taking action over analysis paralysis. In an environment like ours where execution and merit are rewarded, it is critically important to focus on stepping forward, taking responsibility, and contributing to the best of your ability. If you see a challenge or problem, come up with a solution and take action. Find ways to have a competitive edge, compete fiercely, collaborate with respect. Focus on taking action and doing what is right for both you and Dell as winning will inevitably follow.
