“For a woman born in South Africa who moved to Australia, and whose first laptop at age 16 was a Dell Technologies, to now be working for the company twelve years later is an absolute honor and privilege.”

Today, I am an Inside Services Sales Specialist for Dell Technologies in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, after starting my career as a Field Service Engineer in Brisbane, Australia. I spent most of my previous working years in hospitality, with a focus on customer service, sales, and marketing positions. As a girl growing up in the 90s, I never expected to apply myself technically, as I was more inclined toward careers that require "soft skills." When I was considering joining Dell, I was assured that having people skills was highly valued and that technical skills could be taught to anyone willing to learn.

After almost ten years in start-ups, I am happy to finally be associated with a company of Dell’s caliber and stability. Since day one, I have been reassured that my lack of knowledge in IT would not hold me back but that a positive "can-do" attitude would benefit me. I have spent eight years in Tertiary Education institutions doing two master's degrees, and Dell was extremely supportive of me pursuing and completing my MBA and even offered to subsidize some of the costs. This, however, is not where the learning stops — working for Dell means constantly upgrading and updating your knowledge and skills. They encourage learning within the institution, and I am constantly being exposed to new things.

I am part of a team that is always willing to assist and share their knowledge, as well as find support in different departments and aspects of the business when necessary. I am constantly being exposed to new parts of Dell that I was not previously aware of, and the vastness of Dell surprises me every day. We have products and services for every customer's need. Since joining Dell, I have been going through a vigorous and in-depth training regimen that includes both a three-month boot camp with coworkers from around the globe as well as multiple mentoring programs where I have gotten to experience one-on-one, hands-on work with experienced co-workers. This accelerated my confidence levels so much that I have since been considered qualified and equipped enough to mentor mentees who have since joined the company, including an intern. I am now working halfway across the world from where I started after getting the opportunity to transfer internationally with Dell. This is my second location within the USA after getting to experience working in a major disaster recovery zone where big corporations store most of their backups. In Phoenix, Arizona, I got to be a part of a team of 16 field technicians, one of the largest teams within the company. For a woman who was born in South Africa and grew up in Australia and whose first laptop at age 16 was a Dell, to be working for the company 12 years later is an absolute honor and privilege. I cannot wait to see what is in store next!
