Sarah S. is a Small Business, Inside Sales Account Manager at Dell Technologies. Three years ago, she immigrated from Pakistan to Canada and, a year after, began her professional career at Dell. Originally an engineer, Sarah eventually transitioned into sales because of her passion for cultivating relationships.

We had a chance to sit down with Sarah over a Zoom call and spoke on her transition to North America, her team and much more.

You immigrated to Canada about three years ago. What was that transition like?

It was challenging. I didn’t know what cultural shock was. Gratefully, people here are very inclusive and eager to help. The transition was smooth. Never expected to be where I am now in three years' time.

Now that you’ve been here some time, how would you describe Dell as an employer?

Dell isn’t just an employer; it really is a community. When you’re miles away and you’re able to connect and belong to a place, that changes everything. To find friends and community where your ambitions align lead to a great work culture. Both work from home and in the office. From management on down, everyone does their best to maintain that culture and sense of belonging.

Talk to me about your team. What stands out to you the most?

We are a pretty diverse team. Being from Pakistan, I wasn’t always exposed to other cultures, so it was a very nice learning curve for me to learn about the ages, backgrounds, and experiences of the team that I was a part of. Putting that all together and working towards a shared goal is something I enjoy.

What was that moment where you realized this was the place for you to be?

There’s a very good habit that my direct manager has. He’s always eager to ask or learn something different about your culture. When I first joined Dell, it was in the midst of Ramadan. The first few weeks for fine, but once we started fasting, you’re talking about 12-15 hours per day, so, by the end of the day, my energy would be completely low. So, when we were in team meetings, he’d make note and ask how I was feeling, and was just very considerate and accommodating. It’s nice to be able function in that umbrella – here at Dell you can be you while you work.

What makes Dell so special, and why would you recommend to somebody on the job hunt?

Everybody works hard, but it’s honestly such a fun environment. Obviously, you have your goals and standards to meet, but the environment is light and productive. You want to see each other succeed. It really is such a good community to be a part of.

My advice would be to trust the process. Lean on your managers, lean on the work culture. You’ll never need to feel alone or stuck, there’s always someone willing to help. All you have to do is ask! It’s a great place to be and a great place to grow – as an individual and a professional.
