It was March of 2020, and my first year as an MBA student was about to end. I was excited to leave for Bangalore to work in the amazing Dell Technologies office. I had heard so much from my seniors who had also interned at Dell. Everything was set for my departure…and then COVID-19 happened. Within a matter of days, we were all sent home from college and a nationwide lockdown was announced in India soon after.

Amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, companies were struggling to keep up their promises. Cancelled offers, delayed joining dates, lost opportunities. Some of my friends were even forced to take a pay-cut to be able to go ahead with their planned internship. It was a nightmare. I, on the other hand, was lucky. Dell went above and beyond to fulfil their commitments. My internship started as planned (except that it was fully remote now), and on time. I was AMAZED to see the effortless shift from physical to virtual onboarding. Every individual in charge of the process was constantly on his/her toes to guide the new hires. Everything went as smoothly as one would hope, and voila! Just couple of days in, we were already talking about our projects, plans, etc.

Despite losing the opportunity to meet my team and leaders face-to-face, I was able to experience the incredible culture at Dell firsthand. And for that, I’m thankful.

Here are some things I learned during my internship:

  • Learn from the best- I was mentored by a senior leader in the Talent Acquisition team. This helped me get a top-down view of the work that we do and deep-dive into core concepts, methods, strategies and more to truly understand the business. Knowledge-sharing sessions with senior executives helped enhance our business acumen, understand the company and its culture better. I think having a great, tenured mentor really made a huge impact on my internship experience.
  • Interns are encouraged to lead- We were considered no less than a full-time employee. The complete freedom from my mentor allowed me to explore untapped opportunities, while correcting myself whenever I caught myself veering off-course. The continuous evaluation process helped me get valuable feedback to refine my project deliverables. It was a constant learning process.
  • It isn’t all work and no play- Everyone knows we have fun team activities around here, but in our case, interns were pushed to come up with engagement activities on their own! This was a genius move that helped all of us step out of our comfort zone and actively make friends, build our network. The thing I loved most was how enthusiastic the entire team was. I started to look forward to Fun Fridays, because chatting and engaging with my team in an unofficial capacity brought me so much joy.
  • Giving back to the society- Back when I was an MBA student, we used to quote examples of Dell’s Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) as a benchmark of how companies offer an inclusive culture. Once I got here, I was keen to experience this for myself. I was able to carve out some time to teach a module to a group of students as part of a Mosaic ERG initiative. That was fun! The fulfilling feeling of giving back and contributing to society is unparalleled.
  • ‘People first’ are not just buzz words - Dell Technologies is an organization that values its employees. Nearing the end of my internship, I received a little surprise from my mentor and her team. They had curated my pictures in a sweet video with an Amazon voucher and little note of gratitude for my contribution. I was touched!

I walked away from my internship thinking that I wanted to be a part of this company (spoiler alert: I’m back as a full-time employee!). A wide platform for learning, strong values, great colleagues, work/life balance, encouraging leadership and a fun, transparent, non-hierarchic work culture – what’s not to love?!
