At Dell Technologies, we are committed to actively working towards equity for all. By 2030, our goal is for 50% of our global workforce and 40% of our global people leaders to identify as women. Pâmela P. is a Senior Front-end Developer at Dell Technologies Brazil, and she shares with us her experience being a woman at the tech industry and how working at Dell changed her perception of it. Read her testimonial and discover what it’s like to work at Dell.

“My name is Pamela; I'm 34 years old and I'm currently a software engineer on the Design Analytics team at Dell. But 5 years ago, this introduction would be quite different!

Until 2016, my career focused on administrative jobs and I had no idea what JavaScript and front end meant! At the time, I was motivated to dive into the world of Information Technology due to the various job opportunities and the lack of specialized professionals. But with time, a lot of study, and a repository full of unfinished projects, I developed a taste for programming.

Besides the new passion for web development, I was impressed by the collaborative and helpful developer community and the way they supported me to keep up with my studies and improve my work.

But during this path, as a woman and as a developer, I’ve faced some realities:

  • Being the only female developer in the team.
  • Being unable to speak up due to a culture that neglects harassment and other ethical issues.
  • Working on several projects without ever receiving a performance evaluation.
  • Settling for lack of career development.
  • Joining a team where members are rivals, and no one helps each other.
  • Working on a company focused only on profit.

When I became a Dell employee in November 2019, I realized it doesn't have to be that way. Since then, the company and my team have taught me that I can:

  • Belong to a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Take part in a safe environment with strong ethical and cultural values.
  • Communicate with managers and team members to receive and give constant feedback.
  • Be recognized, and able to grow and reach leadership positions.
  • Be taken in by a team that helps members build confidence and that thrives on the growth of all.
  • Join employee diversity groups that promote well-being of co-workers and the local community.

What I really love about being a developer is not just the endless learning opportunities, but this powerful and collaborative network among professionals. And when a company manages to enhance these relationships, it makes the teamwork involved in building software solutions even more rewarding.”
